Bill-O didn't want to hear names because he knew he couldn't defend them.

Goldberg always does this. He changed a bit after he defended Obama's handling of the pirate situation when every other conservative pundit wasn't. He got a bunch of hate mail from the right and he even said so on Hannity's show... even saying to Hannity's face (via satellite) that he was basically a shill (not exact words but something along those lines)
He still hates Obama... and I'm cool with that... but after the hate mail incident he began to see that his own side is just as dumb / robotic / myopic.
