A sneaker is never just a sneaker. Take, for instance, what happened when new Wizard Mike Miller dared to don a pair of the latest LeBron joints at practice. From The News-Herald:
Wizards swingman Mike Miller wore James' Nike shoes to practice and was told by teammate DeShawn Stevenson, "We don't wear these around here."
James said he didn't care. "Mike is a good friend of mine," he said. "He named his son after my best friend, Maverick (Carter). We have a good history." James said Miller should lace up his sneakers, though.
"For an unathletic white guy, these are the best shoes to wear," James said.
This might be the most momentous NBA anecdote of the entire season—past, present or future.
For one, Stevenson is now sustained solely by his imaginary rivalry with LeBron. Gil and LeBron is one thing, but with some perspective, it's pretty amazing that we even humored this one in the first place. Second, how is it that Bron and Miller are such good friends? I know Miller was rumored to go to the Cavs at one point, and as this photo demonstrates, they were in the Tournament of the Americas together. I guess that's all it took.
I'm reminded of the close bond between T-Mac and Miller; McGrady was incensed—well, as much as McGrady can be incensed—when Miller was traded. Bron/Miller must be for real if the latter was moved to name his son "Maverick."
Maybe Miller is sought out as the coolest token white friend around the NBA. That opens up an entire new world of inquiry that even the most intrepid reporter has failed to investigate. And speaking of race, how weird is it to hear LeBron even mention it, much less stereotypically so? Given how careful he and his team are about staying PC, this is a real milestone.

Lebron is just trying to sell to the unathletic white guy demographic. Everyone knows they have the most disposable income to buy shoes.

Well, one thing for sure: the Sporting News doesn't write a fluff piece like above to preemptively short circuit criticism to James....but, rather Media (yes news Media too, the whole f'in kit & kaboodle Media) releases a giant 'tee, hee' enmasse and heads for the word processor with tar, feather and rail in hand.
