Warriors suspend Jackson for conduct detrimental to team

    Posted Oct 10 2009 10:35PM

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Golden State Warriors swingman Stephen Jackson has been suspended for two exhibition games for conduct detrimental to the team.

The team said the suspension is for Jackson's behavior Friday night against the Lakers. He picked up five fouls plus a technical foul in less than 10 minutes of action. He went to the locker room from the bench and never returned.

Jackson will miss Saturday night's game against Phoenix in Indian Wells, Calif., and Monday's game in Los Angeles against the Clippers.

Jackson has been unhappy with Golden State's decline since reaching the second round of the 2007 playoffs. He was fined $25,000 by the NBA last month for publicly requesting a trade.

Before the game, Warriors coach Don Nelson refused to discuss the specifics of Jackson's suspension. But he did say it was an action he and the team didn't want to take.

"In my 30-some odd years in coaching, I never suspended a player before. Maybe I should have a couple of times, but I never have," Nelson said. "I try to stay away from doing anything costing players a lot of money. I may have taken $5,000 or $10,000, but I've tried to stay away from that."

Warriors suspend unhappy Jackson for 2 games
    By Greg Beacham

The Golden State Warriors suspended Stephen Jackson for two exhibition games Saturday after the unhappy captain left the bench during an exhibition contest in Los Angeles.

The veteran swingman picked up five fouls and a technical in less than 10 minutes Friday night while playing against the Lakers at the Forum. After an apparently testy exchange with coach Don Nelson when Jackson’s frustration was evident on the bench, Jackson went to the locker room and never returned.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Jackson was sent to the locker room or went on his own. The Warriors only said Jackson was suspended for “conduct detrimental to the team.”

Jackson has made it known he wants to get away from the Warriors, unhappy with the franchise’s decline after its 2007 playoff run - and he’s getting increasingly insistent about it. He was fined $25,000 by the NBA last month for publicly acknowledging he would welcome a trade, and hasn’t backed down from the stance in recent interviews.

Jackson will miss Saturday night’s game against Phoenix in Indian Wells and Monday’s game at Staples Center against the Clippers. Jackson didn’t even make the trip to the high desert for the Warriors’ outdoor game against the Suns.

Before the game, Warriors coach Don Nelson refused to discuss the specifics of Jackson’s suspension, although he claimed he didn’t want to do it.

“In my 30-some-odd years in coaching, I never suspended a player before,” Nelson said. “Maybe I should have a couple of times, but I never have. I try to stay away from doing anything costing players a lot of money. I may have taken $5,000 or $10,000, but I’ve tried to stay away from that.”

Nelson might not have personally suspended a player before, but the Warriors banned Latrell Sprewell for one game during Nelson’s first stint with the club in January 1995. Golden State made the move after Sprewell skipped a practice for at least the second time that season, costing Sprewell nearly $10,000 in salary - and Nelson parted ways with the Warriors later that season.

Jackson agreed to a three-year, $28 million contract extension with the Warriors last November, but now he wants out - and the former combatant in the infamous Pacers-Pistons brawl in the Auburn Hills stands is making it known in various vocal ways.

The 11-year NBA veteran, who won a championship with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003, is unhappy with Golden State’s decline since the club reached the second round of the 2007 playoffs, ending a 13-year playoff drought with a lineup featuring Baron Davis, Al Harrington and Jackson.

Although Golden State had a winning season in 2007-08, Davis and Harrington are both gone along with most of that roster, leaving the Warriors with a young lineup and seemingly little chance of returning to the playoffs soon.

Nelson and general manager Larry Riley, Nelson’s longtime assistant, have received heavy criticism in the Bay Area for their handling of the club over the past year while top executive Chris Mullin apparently was forced out by president Robert Rowell.

    Stephen Jackson, captain ... lmao.

he intended to GS all along ... signed their offer without any loyalty ever entering the equation when he did, and then expected to trade his way out. that's some grade-A baggery right there. and what i don't understand is GS said they would make a trade if they get something they liked in return, so it's not like they're ignoring his demands. what an ass.

If Jax wants out, he needs to play up to his contract. No contender wants to touch his contract right now.

    Warriors suspend Jackson after outburst

By Marc J. Spears, Yahoo! Sports
    6 hours, 49 minutes ago

The Golden State Warriors suspended disgruntled forward Stephen Jackson(notes) on Saturday for two games after he cursed at coach Don Nelson during a preseason game the previous night, two NBA sources said.

The Warriors announced the suspension prior to Saturday’s preseason game against the Phoenix Suns in Indian Wells, Calif., and said in a statement that Jackson was being punished for “conduct detrimental to the team.”

Jackson’s confrontation with Nelson came after he committed five fouls and a technical in less than 10 minutes of the Warriors’ victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. In addition to yelling at an official, Jackson also became agitated after exchanging words with Lakers guard Kobe Bryant(notes), a source said.

After Jackson left the game with 2:40 left in the first quarter, his meltdown culminated on the sideline when he barked at Nelson, a scene one source described as “very ugly.” Nelson responded by sending Jackson to the locker room for the remainder of the game.

Jackson, who has served as the Warriors’ captain, has simmered all preseason after announcing he wanted a trade from the franchise. The NBA later fined him $25,000 for his comments. Jackson didn’t back away from his trade request during the team’s media day.

“I don’t have a regret about anything I’ve done,” Jackson said at the time.

Jackson, 31, is expected to lose about $150,000 in salary for the two-game suspension. He didn’t make Saturday’s trip and also will miss Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Warriors gave Jackson a three-year extension worth $28 million last season. Including this season, he has four years and about $35 million left on his contract, making him difficult, but not impossible, to trade.

The Warriors have received some interest for Jackson, but nothing they consider fair value, the source said. One reported proposal had Golden State talking with the Cleveland Cavaliers about center Zydrunas Ilgauskas(notes), but the source downplayed the chances of the deal actually happening now, calling it “remote.”

I thought that NBA players' salaries were pro-rated over the regular season games and so a suspension in the pre-season costs you no salary.
