They said both of the above about Robinson.
Mahinmi is no Robinson, but maybe this guy can finally tap into some basketball muse. I have my doubts but Mahinmi is like that guy in the movie "The Rookie." The Spurs wonder if he's got anything, but they're scared as if they dump him, he'll get it together for some other team.
As the baseball scout in "The Rookie" said:
Jimmy, I've been a scout for a long time, and the number one rule is, arms slow down when they get old. Now, if I call the office and tell 'em I got a guy here almost twice these kids' age, I'm gonna get laughed at. But, if I don't call in a 98-mile-an-hour fastball, I'm gonna get fired!
True...but he hasn't even proved to be a Rasho or a Nazr at this point.
Maybe that's because of injuries...or even because...it just ain't goin to happen.
When do you realize the inevitable...when it's too late?
And what if Tiago comes over and Blair turns out to be a top post player?
How long does Mahinmi really have to "Show His Stuff"? Whenever that may be.
Personally...I'm pulling for him as I pull for any hopefull. Statistically...I don't see it happening for him unless he can really bring it this year.
This has been said many times, you can't be a bust when you get drafted that late. Those type of players are usually rotational to bench warmer type players. If Ian can give a few solid minutes during the regular season then mission accomplished.
Again waiting for an explanation how the last pick in the first round can be a bust.
The dude is 22 years old. TWENTY TWO. Give him a break. Some people here are acting like Ian was a top 5 pick thats 24 or 25 already. He was a late first round "project bigman", and is barely 22 years old. He is not a bust.
spurs only need mahinmi for his defensive mobility and shotblocking. all he needs to do is focus on those aspects and he'll find a place in the rotation. basically his only negatives currently are his fouls and injuries, which keep him off the court. he just needs to stay on the court long enough to prove himself.
If anyone thinks that Ian isn't worth developing, see how fast he gets picked up should the Spurs decide to release him. It would be foolish for them to give up, this early, on a 22 year-old, bigman, as physically-gifted, as he. If the Spurs are prepared to see this project through, perhaps so should we.
Maybe its not so much he's a bust than that the Spurs wasted a pick on him.
This team of any should understand that even late first round or 2nd round picks can contribute to a team.
The draft is supposed to help make your team better. You only have 2 chances a year to do so. Ian not being where he should 4 years after he was drafted doesn't help the team. Therefore they wasted a pick on him.

All picked after Ian /js
The dump Ian movement has to be the most ignorant one ever perpetrated by Spurs fans on the internets.
I don't know about that..there's a lot of compe ion on here..
It's hard to teach 6'11" and athletic. Truth is, Ian probably should have stayed in France a while longer. That way we wouldn't be scrutinizing him every day.
I think he'll come around and be somewhat productive. The guy has a lot of upside, and let's face it - because of Blair we now have the luxury of taking a flier on Ian.
Plus, Ian is a better defender now than Bonner will ever be.
In 2 years, think of a possible, frontline rotation that includes Blair, Ian, Splitter and Bouronis. Doesn't have the same "wow" and "superstar" skill factor of our old Twin Towers duo (Duncan and D-Rob), but it would certainly be an intriguing mix of diverse bigmen.
Hindsight is always 20/20. There are also plenty of players that have been taken in lottery rounds, mid-1st round that have accomplished less than Ian. Wielding a double edged sword with that argument.
