It would have been hilarious if they had T-Mac give Timmy's line: "It's on me to be unbreakable."

    Adidas' Quixotic Basketball Push
    Todd Wasserman

Adidas, very much an underdog in the category, is continuing its full-court press into the basketball arena today with a campaign featuring NBA All-Stars Dwight Howard and Derrick Rose with the theme "Celebrating basketball as a brotherhood."

The campaign, via 180 Los Angeles, includes a TV spot showing Rose and Howard along with Kevin Garnett, Chauncey Billups, Tim Duncan, Tracy McGrady and Josh Smith playing on an ethereal, all-white court with each repeating variations of the sentiment "It's on me..." (For example, "It's on me to rise up.") The ads continue a theme Adidas introduced in 2007 with a campaign featuring Garnett, Billups, Duncan, McGrady, Howard and Gilbert Arenas around the theme "Basketball is a brotherhood."

In addition, six "sharable" clips featuring the players, interviews and behind-the-scenes footage from various Adidas events are housed on adidasbasketball.com. 180's sister company, RIOT, handled the digital aspect of the campaign.

The push is the latest effort by Adidas, which has been targeting the basketball segment since the early 90s after largely sitting out the previous decade when Nike came to dominate the sport, a trend that continues to this day. According to SportsOneSource, Adidas has just 2 percent of the basketball category compared to 75 percent for the Nike-owned Brand Jordan and 18 percent for Nike.

Undaunted, Adidas redoubled its efforts this decade when it signed an 11-year global merchandising partnership with the NBA, the Women's National Basketball Association and the NBA Development League in 2006. Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst with the NPD Group, said that Adidas' success in basketball will depend largely on how athletes embrace the brand. "One of the challenges of entering a new category is the endorsements and how well the celebrities may help catapult the brand," he said, pointing out that Under Armour was able to penetrate the NFL that way a few years ago. "But being in the top three brands across all [athletic footwear] categories gives them a real opportunity to make a mark."

Matt Powell, a footwear analyst for Princeton Retail Analysis, said that Jordan continues to be a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon, but Adidas has a shot at increasing its market share. "It's certainly possible for them to grow when there's so much concentrated in one name," Powell said, referring to market share. Powell added however, that even the top names in the NBA like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett still don't "have the resonance even approaching" Jordan.

    From adidas.com.

    It's On Me For We

It’s been a while since the NBA greats stepped onto the hardwood to represent their Brotherhood. At last, the 09/10 season is upon us, and it’s time to go to work. It’s time for each player to step up and decide their fate. To take on the personal responsibility they have to their team. A responsibility that can best be described in three simple words…”It’s on Me”.

Every night, these guys will go out on to the court with the mantra “It’s on Me for my Brotherhood”. It’s on Dwight for Orlando in his TS Commander LT’s . Rose for Chicago in his TS Cut Creators. It’s on KG, J Smooth and Duncan. It’s on all of us for our Brotherhood. Let’s suit up and let the NBA season begin.

Step up with us. It’s on YOU now.

Adidas making another push in NBA

Adidas trails way behind Nike when it comes to basketball. Nike has more prominent NBA stars endorsing their product (e.g.- Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant) than Adidas, which has translated into much larger market share for Nike. Nike has had so much success in the NBA that it even has it’s owned themed basketball shoes, the Jordan Brand.

But Adidas is content to concede the category to Nike and has launched a new campaign to promote the 3 stripes. The new Adidas campaign is “celebrating basketball as a brotherhood” and features Adidas’ most prominent NBA endorsement stars; Dwight Howard, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett and Derrick Rose. Adidas hopes that putting all of their big names together in these segments will outshine any individual endorser that Nike has. This campaign is an extension of their 2007 “Basketball is a brotherhood” theme.

Top NBA stars that endorse Adidas:

    Gilbert Arenas
    Chauncey Billups
    Tim Duncan
    Kevin Garnett
    Tracy McGrady
    Derrick Rose
    Josh Smith

    Top NBA endorsers for Nike:

    Ray Allen (Jordan Brand)
    Carmelo Anthony (Jordan Brand)
    Kobe Bryant
    Kevin Durant
    Blake Griffin (rookie)
    Richard Hamilton (Jordan Brand)
    Lebron James
    Joe Johnson (Jordan Brand)
    Chris Paul (Jordan Brand)

    Top NBA endorsers for Reebok:

    Baron Davis
    Allen Iverson
    Al Jefferson
    Yao Ming

    Top NBA endorsers for Converse:

    Kirk Hinrich
    Dwayne Wade
    Elton Brand

Well, that list in the last post by Duncan228 is out-dated. Dwyane Wade left Converse over the summer to join Brand Jordan, while Baron Davis' hasn't been with Reebok for over a year, since he inked a contract with one of those cornball looking Chinese shoe companies.

I think Adidas may never overtake Nike, since Nike's got such a huge amount of the market share, but they've done some interesting designs and being the official apparel/outfitter of the NBA helps as well. Hopefully they go back to creating signature shoes and also keep their current "signature team" designed shoes.

Yes. The list is outdated. Wade is now endorsing the Jordans. Not sure about Hinrich and Brand though.
