I know it's not the most advanced version of the different flavors that Microsoft are churning out but for Windows 7 for $30? You better believe it I signed up.

I already got a full blown copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, both 32 and 64 bit, for free. Legally.
Im in the I/T department for my company and we have access to Microsoft Technet.

fckn IT ppl or students studying in that field always get cheap software, even teachers get software for like 5 bucks and
Yeah I've done that many times but it gets annoying when I want to update my system through Windows Update and I need to search the net for a crack or something.
I rather pay the cheap $30 instead of putting up with all the hassle.
yeh if its cheap for 30bucks for retail or oem version, i would pay to go legit, same with its office package....hence the reason why im using openoffice instead....

Im just in a general helpdesk for Southwest Research Ins ute. There's only like 6 of us here. We trouble shoot everything from network issues, software and hardware issues as well as printers, scanners, ect... We basically do everything.
We've been running 32bit for a while now. Have a copy of 64bit but can't load it for work because there's not a great VPN "approved" client out there that works on 64bit.
How do you like Win7?
I bought the $30 student one a few months ago... did the download this morning and started the actual install part at 10am this morning... we'll see how long it takes. I'm surprised they had the emails out with access to the downloads as early as they did (11pm central last night)
Win7 looks interesting, but there is no upgrade from XP, and no way am i spending entire day reinstalling programs.
Upgrade took almost exactly 4 hours... initial quick reaction (which I knew going in) is it visibly looks almost exactly like vista, but the actual improvements are supposed to be under the hood. I'm just hoping it extends the life of my laptop for a little longer.
We dont actually run it at work just yet as it doesnt recognize our Samba cluster. I've noticed some problems when connecting through VPN as well, such as not being able to map a drive even via IP address..... it just keeps prompting for username and password.... but again, I think thats something on our end the way we have the network setup.
Running it at home and havnt really had a problem with it.
I just read the FAQ and apparently you can get the Professional version for the same price. I wonder if I can get some kind of refund or upgrade.

either you run with the current OS and install win7 on a seperate machine and get the hang of it b4 switching ur business/network over to it....better safe proof first b4 changing over....
Microsoft goes hard trying to get students using their software. I went to one of their recruitment parties at school one time and got free copies of XP Pro and Visual Studio Professional (Visual Studio Pro was something like $1200 at the time). I gave em both away to friends though, as I preferred gcc and g++ to VC++, Java to C#, and Python to VB.
I just bought a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit yesterday from my campus computer store for $35 and installed it today. There are some perks to being in school after all!
I installed it in about 1 1/2 hours on my HP Pavilion dv6 (16" screen, Intel Centrino Core2 Duo 2.13 GHz., 500 GB HD, 4 GB RAM, etc). The most noticeable improvement is how the system runs is how much less RAM it uses. What I have running right now put me at ~50% on Vista Home Premium 64-bit, but instead it's using only 38%. I'll probably never restart this thing again, lol.
The one thing that bugged me the most when I had Vista was (not sure how many people had this problem) when I opened or closed the Task Manager using CTRL + SHIFT + ESC. I like to have the taskbar auto-hide on the left side of the screen, so every time I would open the Task Manager, it would make the taskbar freak out, pop-up and then hide a few times really quickly. I describe it as "fluttering." You would have to see it to understand fully. Anyway, it doesn't do that anymore with 7, thank God. That was the only real glitch I seemed to have, but it annoyed the out of me.
So far, I really like Aero peek, the libraries set-up, and the snipping tool (it's going to get a lot of use from me) which is like print screen, but you can select a specific part of the screen. The start menu search works a uva lot faster. In general, they smoothed out pretty much everything from Vista and made it more intuitive.
I'm glad I never actually bought Vista (came pre-installed on the 2 comps I've had since XP) and feel sorry for those who did, especially since 7 came out so quickly.
