can we cut bogans?

NBA rosters have to be set on Monday for the regular season. The Spurs final spot comes down to Malik Hairston and Marcus Williams. Gregg Popovich doesn't seem eager to cut either of them.
"They've steadily improved since the day they became a part of the program," Popovich tells the San Antonio Express-News. "They've put in their time in the D-League in Austin and summer leagues with us. They've both continued to develop nicely. ... They're both going to have a place in the league. They're good enough to be in the league and will make a team."

The way he says that they are good enough "to make A team" doesn't exactly make me think that team is going to be the spurs.
Sure. Still have to pay his full salary and the tax, but sure.

I can't say I have watched them enough to make an informed decision based on that, but from what I have read Hairston is the way to go, specially for the future. Williams has his upside, he plays multiple positions and apparently he can play point guard which is an important position that is becoming harder and harder to fill out with actual good players. There are more and more not-good-enough players in this league that are here just because they can play point (read JV) or that are not that good anymore but are/were starters for the same reason (read Fisher, Blake, all Nuggets PGs before Billups, etc). However, Williams has shown very little else during his stints with the team. Given that we are mostly set at PG for the next few years (TP and GH) there is no reason to keep him around. If injuries happen, we have enough decent handlers to play spot minutes at point and we also have enough assets to trade for a replacement, or in the worst case, we sign JV or some other FA as a 15th man to play sporadically. Plus we have our 2009 draft picks to come over if needed in the future. Hairston on the other hand, can cover an important hole in the next few years since several of our wings' contracts are coming to an end (Manu, Mason and Finley). Manu is most likely to stay but you never know (mini heart attack just for thinking about it). Mason's destiny depends on this season, if he plays great it's unlikely he remain a Spur because we can't offer him a lot of money nor the minutes he would want and deserve. Finley is likely to retire. So we lose at least one wing, probably 2 (and hopefully not 3!). Enter Hairston as a cheap, "system veteran" backup to whoever remains.

I don't think Williams is still eligible to play for the Toros, although I could be mistaken..

Theres no way I cut Bogans to take on Marcus Williams. And it has nothing to do with money.
Williams is a bust and worthless in the NBA. He'll be great all day long in the D-League and he can probably make a name for himself in Europe, but he lacks the physical tools in the NBA.
Meanwhile, Bogans is a player that has proven he belongs on an NBA roster. Regardless of his poor shooting this pre-season, why would we even considering dropping him for Wiliams?
Nope. He has at least two years of NBA experience. Spurs/Clippers/Spurs.
edit: To clarify. He cannot be assigned for the Spurs and go to the D-League. If hes not on an NBA roster then he can sign and play all day long. But as soon as hes brought up to the big league he can't go back down until hes released.
I think he can play in the D-League, but not as an assignment from the Spurs and they would no longer have the rights to keep other teams from signing him.

The Bogans v. Williams debate should really stop...honestly, who cares about two guys that are not going to make a significant impact on a championship roster. Williams will be cut.
The only real debate is whether they cut Hairston to save money and only carry a roster of 14. Hairston has shown enough that he'd get scooped up by another team and probably become a decent bench contributor immediately.
I personally hope the Spurs keep him to maintain that depth and continue his long-term development in the system.

A player like Bogans is more about injury insurance than trying to get him into the rotation. A player like Marcus Williams will require minutes in actual games to get better (especially with Austin not an option). Bogans is what he is. He can ride the bench and contribute if needed. Very similar to the role Jacque Vaughn was intended to fill prior to Beno flaming out and Vaughn becoming the back-up.
Not all of the players on a 15 man squad are going to be studs. Sometimes you need a cheap vet that can fill a spot deep on the bench. Bogans does that for minimum wage.
If Hairston is retained and used ahead of Bogans its all good, I think most of us will be satisfied with losing Williams.
Hairston over a lot of guys on the spurs team in my opinion. Including Williams/Jerrels/Bogans and maybe even Finley cause of his Defense and athleticism.
