I agree. In Austin Tuesday night, Curtis played very good D in his few minutes on the court. He created a steal and he stayed in front of his man with good aggression.

Spurs cut Jerrells; down to 16 players

The Spurs trimmed their roster to 16 players after Thursday's practice, waiving guard Curtis Jerrells, the former Baylor University and Austin Del Valle High School star.

Jerrells appeared in five of the Spurs' six preseason games, averaging 3.6 points and 1.8 assists in 14.8 minutes. His downfall in a long-shot attempt to make the roster: 7 for 25 (28.0 percent) shooting. He was 0 for 4 from 3-point range.

Small consolation: Jerrells got to log some solid minutes in front of friends and family at University of Texas' Erwin Center in a Spurs victory over the Thunder on Tuesday night before the Spurs cut him.

Malik Hairston and Marcus Williams are the lone remaining Spurs who do not have fully guaranteed contracts. The Spurs are allowed to keep as many as 15 players. They must be down to 15 by Monday.

Yeah it almost seems like they've made up their mind with Williams, after not playing him Tuesday. For all we know maybe he is the front runner ahead of Hairston. He is more versatile and he's been in the Spurs system longer.
Mahinmi also didn't play. The Spurs are likely to keep Mahinmi.

Williams also didn't play. Therefore, they likely will also keep Williams!!

So the Spurs go into the season with just 2 viable PG's.

The only thing I have to question about the offseason is the fact they could have had a player like Ramon Sessions for the same money they are guaranteeing to other players that won't see a minute of action in a position that is overloaded.

Parker and Hill as your only viable PG's could spell trouble if any one and heaven forbid both should get injured.

Sessions or McDyess? Can't have both.

But if Parker or Hill get injured (hope not), there are still plenty of good PGs in the free agent pool

Like Stephon Marbury (just kidding...ignore my comment)

Yes they could have. From my understanding...Session's did not have Byrd rights.

    ?

    1. Whether or not Sessions had Bird rights or not has zero to do with what the Spurs can offer him.
    2. Sessions was a restricted free agent. No matter what the Spurs offered him, the Bucks could have matched it.
    3. Sessions ended up getting a contract from the Timberwolves starting at $3.6 million. McDyess signed for $4.5 million. 3.6 + 4.5 = 8.1, which is far more than the MLE that the Spurs had to spend.

I think we've got enough roster depth, but if Spurs want to trade Williams, they should make a package of Williams and someone, maybe Ian or Bonner, both can be expired contract.

I wouldn't even think about dumping Bonner for nothing..if we're going to dump players to save some $, Williams/Haislip would be fine with me, but I'm not a salary cap guy, so I don't know how much we'd save..

I find interesting that Spurs haven't waived Williams even if he hasn't had a good preseason and got a DNP-CD Tuesday.

Unlike other training camp invite, he has signed with Spurs last year which mean they could trade him right now. So maybe Spurs are keeping just in case a trade pop up later this week.
Or the Spurs just need bodies for scrimmaging purposes.

That may happen but I believe that jettisoning Hairston, who has outperformed Bogans, Haislip and even Mason in pre-season, would be a slap to the face of their own company-owned development system (Toros). They need to win now, but sending Hairston away sends a message to their students and teacher Quinn Snyder, especially if they don't pick up Mahinmi's option. We like you, we own you, but we're just not that into you.

Great point..as some of us mentioned a few weeks ago, keeping Hairston is not only a good move from a production standpoint, but it also promotes the success of the Toros and the D-league in general, especially when it's a guy of Hairston's work ethic..

Stats-wise, Hairston has actually outperformed Ginobili in fewer minutes/game.

He plays solid enough defense that he'll pick up. The sad part was that I went to the Spurs game in Austin Tuesday and I saw his parents and brother. All of them had Spurs jerseys number 5, Jerrells.
What is sad about that? They'll keep the jerseys and be proud of it some years from now.

Did you miss the Ginobili interview?

He was alluding to the fact that after Parker and Hill, we have Mason.

The waiving of Jerrells is not worth two pages. IMO He'll be in Austin.

    Sessions likes macaroni and cheese.

That is just as relevant as his bird rights to whether or not we could have fit him and mcdyess into this summer together. There simply was not enough money available to spend.
