IRVING, Texas -- Patrick Crayton is willing to say what the Dallas Cowboys coaches won't: He's been replaced in the starting lineup by Miles Austin.
Crayton just wishes somebody would have told him that. He figured it out Monday, when Austin worked opposite Roy Williams in two-wide receiver sets.
Austin continued to get reps with the starters during Wednesday's practice, but none of the coaches have explained the situation to Crayton.
"I would have loved it," Crayton said of an explanation from head coach Wade Phillips or offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. "It would have been real stand-up. That's not what happened. Oh, well."
Crayton, who dealt with a similar demotion after the Cowboys traded for Roy Williams in the middle of last season, isn't pouting about becoming a No. 3 receiver again. He considers his role "to help in whatever way possible." He just feels that, as a six-year veteran, he deserves an explanation.
"That way you're not in the dark about why the change is made," Crayton said.
It's not as if Crayton didn't see it coming. He knew when Wade Phillips told the media last Monday that Miles Austin would play "fifty-something" snaps per game on the heels of his franchise-record 250-yard performance. But Crayton wonders how much his admittedly poor performance in Kansas City affected the decision.
Based on production, one could make the case that Austin (15 catches, 331 yards, three touchdowns) and Crayton (15 catches, 243 yards, one touchdown) should be the starters with Williams (11 catches, 214 yards, one touchdown) relegated to the third receiver role. But, considering Williams' arrival in a blockbuster trade and $9 million per year salary, Crayton knew that wasn't a realistic scenario.
"When you give up a first and third and a sixth and you pay a guy that much," Crayton said, "he's gotta play."
That information didn't come from a coach or front office member. Crayton just connected the dots, which is what he has to do in lieu of communication at Valley Ranch.

I'm glad that Crayton went to the #3 spot and Austin's at #2, just like i predicted.

Crayton is not a starting WR in this league. Verdict is still out on Austin. Roy Williams verdict is still out.

Crayton is worthless and I wish they would keep on pushing him down the depth chart. It baffles me that this guy has played over Miles Austin and Sam Hurd (arguably the best WR they have) for so long. I wanted to reach through my TV and strangle him during the KC game. I'm happy that they signed Rossum because he has no business being on special teams or the hands team. Worst hands on the team, IMO.

Anytime Crayton wants to , the coaches can always pull tape of the 07 playoff game against the Giants to shut him up.

Driving home I heard Wade's presser... It's like a in comedy. He skirted the whole Crayton thing by a lot of "uhhh"s followed by "we still don't know if Roy W will play this week".

Then a reporter asked him about a comment Jerry Jones said about this being a statement game and the most important game of the season and Wade shot back "I never said that!!" very emphatically. Then the reporter told him Jerry said it and Wade rolls over and says "He's right, whatever he said is right". What a P U P P E T. For god sakes man, you've made enough money in your coaching career to be set for life get some balls and don't roll over like a trained puppy

Crayton is a 3rd receiver at best but Sam Hurd isn't any bettter. Hurd is a camp superstar - great training camps but disappears once the pressure is on.

Miles Austin is a better overall player than Patrick Crayton, just shut your mouth and play man. Crayton is probably best being a slot receiver and thats it...

Oh noes! A disgruntled player on the plowgirls going to the media to let everyone know which creates uncertainty and looking over your shoulder in the locker room... that sort of thing NEVER happens in such an outstanding organization such as they are.

Crayton is best fit for the slot reciever role where he excelled a few years ago when the cowboys had T.O. and Terry Glenn starting. But he can step into the starting role if needed and make a few plays. But he is not a guy who should start in front of Miles Austin

Crayton needs to shut the up and take it like a man. He's nothing better than a slot reciever at best, and I think even Kevin Ogletree could be as good, if not, better than Crayton is. , Sam Hurd might have better hands than Crayton, who made a statement in 07 that he catches every ball that's thrown to him, then dropped balls in that playoff game against NYG.

Sure, Miles might not put up huge numbers every game like that, but he's a better fit at that spot than Crayton is. Crayton is such a little puss.

Listen Crayton is a bust and if he couldn't figure out the writing on the wall than he's a moron. Just because you were one of TO's boys doesn't mean you have to act like him.

Man up, catch some balls, and do something positive when you're in the game. But right now Crayton, you suck, plain and simple.

Really? That's just ing re ed. You have no idea what TO did out here. No heart? Maybe you're right..but the fact remains..we've lost 2 games. Both of them in the last two minutes against undefeated teams in which we led in the 4th quarter..
