Good lord, seriously?
http://www.nba.com/2009/news/powerra...son/index.html
We know that the Spurs will give the Lakers their toughest challenge in the West come April, but Gregg Popovich won't put the pedal to the metal in the regular season. This writer has San Antonio in the Finals, but they'll have to do it as a 2 or 3 seed.
Considering how we got trounced by a weak Mavs team, they have given us quite the benefit of the doubt.
ESPN (Stein) also has the Spurs 5th.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/powerr...on=2010&week=0The Spurs, for what it's worth now, are the clear-cut biggest winners of the offseason. How do we know? Because they wouldn't even be in the top five/championship conversation without their summer moves.
I do not disagree with this actually. What the guy said was right. I do not expect the Spurs to come out swinging. They still have some kinks to work out, so they won't try to lead the race until Pop feels they can play the game the way he designed it.
correct. spurs will be 5-5 or even 4-6 in the first 10 games
who let da dogs out who who who?
Sounds right, if you would put the Spurs over Cleveland/Boston/Orlando/L.A then you're a homer.
I think Boston has all the same issues from last year as the Spurs. I wouldn't have any problem putting the Spurs at 4 ahead of Boston, but for now who gives a flying rat's ass?![]()
Mitt Romney, is that you?
I have to disagree. The Spurs are a much better team than Boston, Cleveland and Orlando. They also have more talent overall than the Lakers. This years squad is one of the most talented in franchise history. They have eight players(Tim, Tony, Manu, Dice, Jefferson, Hill, Mason, Blair) that are capable of starting on most NBA teams. And their 9 and 10 guys (Bonner and Finley) started on a Spurs playoff team last year. Even if Pop shortens the minutes of Tim, Tony and Manu they have other guys that with greater minutes can produce on both sides of the court. I believe that it is possible that this Spurs team can easily surpass 60 wins. Other than the top eight teams the parity in the NBA is quite evident. The Spurs can win some games on sheer talent alone. Throw in Pops ability as a coach and it is going to be a long run this year in the playoffs.
I think Stein's blurb on the Mavs contains words to remember:
Dallas is deeper than it was when it went to the 2006 Finals. The problem: San Antonio can say the same about its current team and the 2007 le team. The compe ion at the top is so much deeper now, too.
Even if everyone stays healthy and all the additions fit in seamlessly, the Spurs are hardly a lock.
I think L.A. and the Magic are head and shoulders above the league right now. Boston/Cavs/Spurs are right below and the rest doesn't matter. With that said I don't mind placing the Spurs at the bottom of the totem pole because they have so many players to incorporate starting the season.
like the lakers last year, spurs will win early in the season on sheer talent alone. isn't hard to imagine the spurs going 7-3 the first ten games even if they still have some issues to work out.
Ill have whatever your smoking.
So why does that make us the 5th best team? Answer it does not and I will betcha at the end of the day the Spurs have a top 2-4 ranking in wins and in this BS.
The Spurs will quickly move to # 1 in these rankings and stay there. The Spurs are loaded this year. Consider these facts:
1) Hill is the best back-up point guard in the NBA and would start for most teams. He is one of the most improved players in the NBA and was already really good last year. He was great in pre-season and in the summer league.
2) Parker is inury free, is in his prime, and played very well in pre-season.
3) Ginobili is not injured.
4) Duncan lost 15 pounds and looks quicker. If you factor efficiency per 48 minutes with =/- during the pre-season, he was one of the best two players in the NBA in pre-season, tied with Blair.
5) 'Dice is a lot better than Bonner or Oberto. He was a double-double machine last year and can play defense. He rebounded great in pre-season, and now the Spurs have 3 rebounders instead of one.
6) Blair looks like a future all-star. He was great in the summer league, and great in college last year.
7) Jefferson is a great player, but he is only the 4th best Spur. Last year, he was the best Buck, and the Bucks challenged for the playoffs. Has not missed a game since three years ago.
These 7 players are the team. We have no injuries. These are all very good players who can outplay anyone, including LA.
Role Players:
Mason, Bonner, and Finley aren't very good, but will get more chances for easy threes this season. Supposedly Mason is improved from last year.
Theo Ratliff will be a spot player and block some shots, he blocked a few in pre-season.
Bogans will play 5 minutes a game, if he's lucky.
Haislip is supposedy much improved from playing in Europe and is supposedly a great athlete. It true, he might play more than 5 minutes a game.
Ian is not ready for prime time, he can play in the numerous blowouts we will have this season. Was good in the summer league.
Hairston is a bench-warmer, who can also play in blow-outs. He was good in the summer league.
# 5 for Tim, book it!

Monroe has them 4th, after Lakers, Celtics, Cavs.
http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137465Analysis: Dramatic reshaping of roster added youth, athleticism and offensive options. Playoff success still hangs on defensive excellence and Ginobili's health.
Sounds about right, we have a lot to prove.
itz all good. we all prove them wrong eventually
Out of all the serious contenders, Spurs have the most questions to answer. I agree with the rankings.
1. Lakers
2. Magic
3. Celtics
4. Spurs
5. Cavs
This makes the most sense....
I'd definitely put them over Cleveland.
The esteemed LA Times NBA writer, Mark Heisler, has the Spurs 3d in the West (behind the Lakers and Portland).

Power ranking is not important, I remember last season most espn experts predicted Spurs could win 1st round in play-offs, and we lost.
