Being a fan of a sports team inherently means that you hold that team in high regard. And for some people, that high regard means that they do not accept being told otherwise.

So yes, the sports team one is a fan of can be a sensitive topic for some people. Claiming otherwise is saying that you know how everybody explicitly feels about their team.
