IRVING, Texas -- Roy Williams remains the Dallas Cowboys' No. 1 receiver, at least in his mind.

After putting in a lot of extra offseason work with quarterback Tony Romo, Williams is stunned they haven't made more progress.

"It's just not even close," Williams said. "It's not even funny. Not even close."

Williams does not believe his poor production accurately portrays his performance.

"I'm the No. 1 receiver," Williams said. "But things are just going No. 2's way."

The No. 2 is Miles Austin, who has produced like a Pro Bowler since moving into the starting lineup. Austin has set an NFL record with 482 yards in his first three starts, scoring on five of his 21 receptions during that span.

Compare that to Williams' statistics in 16 games since arriving from Detroit in a blockbuster deal: 33 catches, 447 yards and three touchdowns.

Considering those numbers, how could Williams possibly still see himself as the Cowboys' No. 1 receiver?

"He gets the ball thrown correctly his way," Williams said of Austin. "I'm stretching and falling and doing everything. Everybody [else] who's been here's balls are there. Our footballs [from Romo to Williams] are everywhere right now."

Williams has caught only 14 of 37 passes thrown his way this season. Only four receivers in the league who have been targeted at least 25 times have caught a lower percentage of passes aimed at them.

Williams stressed that he's pleased that the Cowboys are winning, but he's frustrated that he hasn't been more effective. He isn't asking for more opportunities. He just wants to be put in better position to make plays -- which means getting on the same page with Romo.

"We're going to be fine there," Romo said after Sunday's win over the Seattle Seahawks. "I know what Roy's doing. It's just a matter of going back and looking the tape and seeing what we have to do better. But it's just part of growing with a receiver."

Roy Williams has always been a big name receiver since he came out of Texas...big production for one season, but the NAME has always been big. That's the only reason he got the contract he got. What rock have you been under?

They could have got Boldin for what they gave for Williams. Williams was just a guy putting up good numbers on a bad team.

Yes..they could have...but happens...you move on. a bunch of other teams could have ended up with Randy Moss. Portland could have ended up with Michael Jordan...I could go all day. Bottom line is, he needs to shut up and play...or sit his ass on the bench. Austin, Crayton, Hurd is sounding pretty damn good to me right now. At least they catch the ball when it's close to them.

The fact of the matter is..he does play. He's not a very good reciever. At all. He can't get any seperation on any of the guys he is on. I don't care what he thinks or what any Williams apologist says, he's not a number 1 reciever in the NFL. He's never been a number 1 reciever. I'm sure it's no coincidence that a team that went 0-16 traded him, when you're that bad, if Roy Williams is a number one reciever...you don't trade him away.

obviously the Cowboys overpaid him, but I do think Roy can be effective. Sure, some of Roy's routes are lazy, but alot of the times, Romo's passes are way off. they're either behind, way too low, nowhere near, or 15 feet in the air where no one can catch it (see, bruised ribs, Roy Williams). There were many times in training camp where Roy and Romo looked dead on. I don't understand why they can't do it in a game.

wonder why miles austin is open all the time?
I agree with this. Statistics are way overrated, in most sports. You need to use your eyes and make judgments based on actual contributions---which means noticing when he's commanding double coverage, or laying serious blocks, or doing other things to make opposing defenses less effective.

For many years Bruce Bowen was the greatest perimeter defender in the NBA, but his statistics were always lame.

see: Bengals, Raiders, Lions, Browns, Falcons (till Matt Ryan), Redskins, Cardinals (till last year), Rams. Don't be stupid. If you're a fan, you're a fan. Obviously you're a bandwagonner...you don't bail on your team when the chips are down. And how the is one receiver upset because he and the QB aren't connecting supposed to embarrass the fans? Because he's an idiot isn't going to change our views on an entire team, and make us not root for them anymore. I guess Mikey and I are just going to have to stop rooting for the Cowboys after all these years because Roy was frustrated.

Roy has a lot of raw talent..the problem is he sucks balls at running routes.

I love how ESPN failed to mention this quote..

"If you continue to work out every day, it'll pay off," Williams said. "It'll pay off one of these 16 games."

Doesn't sound as pissed off in this quote as he did the rest of the McMahon story. Same interview, picked up by the Dallas Morning News.

He does need to shut his mouth but he is valuable in the running game as well as blocking or screens or other receivers. They took him out of the x spot which was good, I think they need to try him in the slot on some formations and run Austin and either Hurd or Ogletree in the x and z. Couple that with witten/Bennett and Felix or Tashard in the backfield and you have some interesting matchups. I'd might even tinker with lining him up as a weak side TE and forcing either a LB matching up or a nickel/dime defensive set. Get him in some good matchups and see if he can get going - the guy has put up numbers before so it's there somewhere.

roy williams would not even be able to get a 6th round pick in a trade made today. how sad is that. waive his ass in the summer and give the younger receivers the baton.

Can they really afford the dead money cap hit if they cut a dude they just resigned for 5 years? If they had a competent coaching staff, they could couch him up and see if he can learn to run a route.

There is no need to roll coverage Roy's way.

And any defensive scheme that did roll coverage that way on the majority of pass plays deserves to have the HC and/or DC fired.

Agreed. Roy does need to shut up, but also, Romo needs to hit him in the numbers. I've heard some blame that on his route running, but , T.O. is one of the worst route runners of all ing time, and Romo use to hit him in the numbers. They just have not gotten on the same page.

But we have the greatest WR of all time in Miles, so we the failed Romo to Roy connection hasn't hurt us to badly lately.
