DeJuan Blair 10 seconds away from being a Cavalier

I reported this on my NBA 411 segment on "Mike and Mike in the Morning'' today: DeJuan Blair was 10 seconds away from joining "King James'' and "The Big Shaquisition'' in Cleveland.
On draft night 2009, Cleveland offered Denver $2 million for the 34th pick. Cavs GM Danny Ferry thought it was essentially a done deal and had fingered Blair as the pick.
But with just 10 seconds left to make its selection, Denver was offered $2.25 million, a league record for the sale of a 34th pick, from the Houston Rockets. Because there was such a small amount of time left to make the pick, the Nuggets didn't have a chance to give Cleveland the opportunity to beat Houston's offer.
So the Rockets got the pick and instructed Denver to select Sergio Llull for them. Three picks later, San Antonio took Blair.
Of course, Cleveland could have gotten Blair at 30, but it took Christian Eyenga instead

We did them a solid (Scola), they did us a solid. Texas courtesy.
Blair would not have gotten as many minutes up in Cleveland as he will and is here in San Antonio though.
Sounds like someone in the Cavs draft room is trying to save his job. Who the is Christian Eyenga?
Umm...no.

I bet Ferry is kicking himself in the ass over that one.

Jokes... I got a million.
A guy that would have gotten two guaranteed years if he wasn't willing to play overseas. Cavs are all focused on next summer and didn't want anything unnecessary on the payroll next year. Doubtful that they would have given Blair anything over the minimum required if they got him in the second round.
Also interesting that one year after a last minute move by the Rockets kept Batum from the Spurs and led to drafting Hill, a last second Rocket deal led directly to Blair.
Sometimes things have a tendency to work out. Though I liked Batum at the time I think this is a better situation for the Spurs.
Interesting how it worked out. The BB gods move in mysterious ways.

Looks like we couldnt miss batum or hill they both gonna be great and having blair now is just fantastic.![]()
Cavs got sniped eBay style.
Oh come on!! No one caught this? Really???Cavs GM Danny Ferry thought it was essentially a done deal and had fingered Blair
This story was awesome. I can just imagine Danny Ferry as Homer Simpson slapping his head, "DOH!!!!"
Great story! He would of been a good fit there, but now he gets to learn from the best PF ever....not one "expert" is picking Blair to even sniff rookie of the year....I can't believe that, but I guess that's b/c he is wearing silver and black...if he was posing for family pics before tipoff like King Nothing and gang of degenerates than they would probably be blowing him harder than Brett Favre vs GB.
Christian Eyenga is gonna be a god of basketball, just wait and see. He already is, in his native Africanistan.
What I was just thinking. There's still no excuse for passing up Blair.
I think you are all missing the main point of the article. Denver sold a 34th pick for $2.25mil![]()
