Ariza learns league's business side

A cutthroat business

Trevor Ariza learned something about the NBA from his split with the Lakers.

“I learned that it's cutthroat,” Ariza said. “It doesn't matter who you are. There are no friends in business. You got to just look at it as business. Everything happens for a reason. I'm here. I'm happy to be here. I don't feel any extra pressure or emotion.”

Rockets coach Rick Adelman, however, was not concerned Ariza might try to do too much.
“I want Trevor to do too much,” Adelman said. “We let him play. I think he's got to play. It's kind of unique in that two free agents (Ariza and Ron Artest) chose the other team or got picked by the other team. But I think Trevor's got a pretty good head on his shoulders.
“I always loved it when Chris Webber went against an ex-team because it seemed like he always got a triple-double. I wish he would have got traded more.”

Thanks, but no thanks
Shane Battier took his usual assignment matched up with Kobe Bryant, with Trevor Ariza's familiarity with Bryant from their time together apparently not enough to draw that duty — or to want it.
“I don't think so,” Ariza said. “He's one of the best players ever to play the game, so it doesn't matter what you do. He's going to score.”

No mismatch inside
Andrew Bynum is by far the top-scoring 7-footer the Rockets have faced so far, but Lakers coach Phil Jackson had no intention of testing Chuck Hayes' defense as a staple of his game plan.

“He has such a great base,” Jackson said. “He's capable of doing a real good job. You can't just throw the ball in to Andrew and expect him to score on Chuck. You can't move this guy. He's rooted on the ground. He's a big, strong guy and he's got a great base. The things that will come for Andrew is Chuck having to help somewhere else.”

So far one fluke game from Ariza with 33 pts. Preseason, and Early Season I am not impressed.

Yep. It ain't flashy and it ain't all on the ball, but, he deters a player from wanting it.
