Boozer, Jazz rebound in 113-99 win over Spurs
    By Doug Alden

The boos that the Utah Jazz heard early quickly turned to cheers of “Booz!”

Carlos Boozer and the Utah Jazz finally put on a show worth rooting for, beating the San Antonio Spurs 113-99 on Thursday night.

The Jazz ended a two-game losing skid and undid a little of the damage done in an embarrassing loss two nights before.

“We played a lot harder,” Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. “I was proud of the way we played. Everyone was involved, trying to help each other and give us chances to win.”

Boozer, who had been struggling, finished with 27 points and 14 rebounds and Deron Williams also scored 27 and added nine assists in Utah’s first win over San Antonio since April 2008.

Andrei Kirilenko added 12 points and six assists and rookie Wesley Matthews scored a career-high 12 points for Utah, which improved to 2-3.

Mehmet Okur and Ronnie Brewer scored 10 apiece as all five Utah starters scored in double figures.

“Everybody was active, especially from the defensive end,” Okur said. “From the first second until the 48th (minute) everybody was active. That’s the way we’ve got to play every night.”

The Jazz shot over 55 percent in the first half and cooled off only slightly in the second, going 19 for 38 in the final two periods.

“We’ve got to finish off games like we did tonight,” said Boozer, who finished 12 for 20 from the floor. “We needed to play a full 48 minutes of basketball and that’s what we got tonight. Prior to this game, we hadn’t done that.”

Tim Duncan had 15 points and 13 rebounds and Tony Parker had 21 points, but scored just four in the second half as the Spurs couldn’t overcome the Jazz’s shooting.

DuJuan Blair scored 14 and Manu Ginobili had 11 points for the Spurs, who gave up a season-high 60 points in the first half.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do to become a good defensive team and Utah obviously took advantage of that tonight,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “They are always an aggressive club and they do a great job of fighting for 48 minutes.”

The Jazz were coming off a devastating loss at Dallas on Tuesday, when they blew a 16-point lead and allowed the Mavericks to come back and win with a 44-point fourth quarter.

Utah smothered any comeback attempts the Spurs had and ended a four-game skid to San Antonio.

“We just did a good job of executing tonight,” said Williams, who made 11 of 19 shots. “We stayed within our offense. We got good shots and we got stops when we needed them.”

Utah was up by 10 at halftime and only let the Spurs get as close as eight before pulling away and protecting the big lead this time.

Boozer was shooting just 35 percent entering the game and was booed when he missed his first shot early in the first quarter, but quickly won back the fans with a couple of hustle plays. Boozer tied up Duncan and forced two jump balls in the first quarter, then carried Utah with his offense.

Boozer also had two steals, both times swatting the ball away from Duncan in the lane and had three assists and two blocks.

“They got the momentum going early on and got rewarded for their physical play,” Duncan said. “We knew it would be that kind of game.”

The Jazz led 93-80 after three and survived a brief lull before pulling away again.

Duncan got San Antonio back to 97-86 on a putback, but Paul Millsap answered with a layup and Boozer hit a shot to put Utah back up 103-88. After Michael Finley went 1 for 2 from the line for the Spurs, Boozer stripped the ball from Duncan to start a fast break, which Matthews ended with a layup to put the Jazz up by 16.

NOTES: The Spurs hadn’t played since beating Sacramento 113-94 on Saturday. … The Jazz outrebounded the Spurs 41-36. … The Jazz hadn’t beaten the Spurs since winning 90-64 on April 4, 2008, in Salt Lake City. … Matthews’ previous career high was eight points. … The Jazz hadn’t scored 100 or more points in a win over the Spurs since February 1999.

No freaking way?! Fans of other teams would kill to have a coach like Pop, us Spurs fans are unbelievably spoiled.

Actually, I am a big fan of Pop...BUT, he does need to rethink things for the long haul. Bonner and Finley just won't cut it...at least not on the floor at the same time and not for more than a few minutes per game. We look as old and slow as last year and we just had a 4 day break. We looked tonight like we just played the 6th game in 6 nights.

Has Pop lost this team already???? It doesn't look like anyone really cared out there except Dejuan. I am serious Pop cannot do those crazy subs ution patterns like he did last season.

I will give him last season because of injuries and lack of depth, but he can't screw around and do those crazy subs utions this season otherwise he's just ing around out there.

Yep...I said it earlier. Much rather have Bruce than Bogans. We have no perimeter defense at the present time.

Utah Jazz: Boozer delivers first solid game
    Double-double » Jazz forward tallies 27 points, 14 boards.
    By Steve Luhm
    The Salt Lake Tribune

Just when the Utah Jazz needed it, Carlos Boozer put together his best performance of the season.

During the Jazz's 113-99 win over San Antonio on Thursday night, Boozer finished with 27 points, 14 rebounds and three assists.

He was also active defensively, helping Utah hold the Spurs to 41 percent shooting.

    Boozer started quickly.

He played the first 7:21 of the opening quarter and scored four points while assisting on another field goal.

Defensively, Boozer opened on three-point specialist Matt Bonner but quickly switched onto Tim Duncan.

Almost immediately, he tied up Duncan on a move across the lane.

Less than two minutes later, Boozer blocked one of Duncan's shots.

By the end of the half, Boozer had a team-high 13 points in 19 minutes. He also grabbed eight rebounds -- one shy of his season average.

It was a far cry from Tuesday's 96-85 loss at Dallas, where Boozer finished a 24-minute performance with 12 points and two rebounds.

Meanwhile, Duncan wasn't a huge factor.

The Spurs' perennial All-Star managed six points, eight rebounds and three blocks. But the Jazz were able to inside and score 38 of their 60 points in the paint.

Boozer didn't slow down in the third quarter, when he scored 10 points, grabbed five rebounds and handed out two assists.

Boozer's first two field goals were tough baseline jumpers. The second gave Utah a 72-57 lead.

With 41/2 minutes left in the period, Boozer rebounded a miss by Deron Williams and scored a put-back that stopped a 5-2 mini-run by San Antonio and bumped Utah's lead to 78-64.

Another Boozer jumper made it 86-72 with 2:42 left before the Jazz power forward made one of his best plays of the game.

On a pick-and-roll with Williams, he took a pass in the lane. As the Spurs collapsed, Boozer kicked the ball to Wesley Mathews in the corner

The Jazz rookie buried the three-pointer, which assured Utah of a cozy 13-point lead heading into the final 12 minutes. Boozer didn't start the fourth quarter, but he capped his night with a 10-footer from the lane that made it 103-88 with 5:38 left.

Moments later, he jumped in front of Tony Parker and helped force a turnover that resulted a clinching breakaway layup by Mathews.

    1. RJ looked as if he doesnt belong...he was mumbling at other spurs after missing his defensive assignments..he needs to do a better job.
    2. lot of bricks.
    3. George Hill was horrible.
    4. TP has to ensure that he involves dice more on offense.

Blair padded his box score during final moments..scrub time..
TP was ok in the first half, but was shut down by D-will in the 2nd half

The defense or lack of, killed the spurs. So did 2nd chance points for the Jazz... So rebounding was also an issue..

    Two words: Midseason trade.

We are not ten players deep. We are eight players deep, because two of the guys Pop plays, actually starts, are not even NBA players at this point. Too bad Pop doesn't realize this, and let's hope it doesn't take him until March to figure that out.

We need to acquire some type of post defender at midseason. We're getting shredded tonight. Did you guys see Okur go by Bonner on the dribble like Bonner was nailed to the floor? It's humiliating that the guy is on our payroll.
More than just trading for more new faces, the team needs an assistant coach like P.J. Carlesimo. It's no use having more talent only to see them being glued to the bench while watching Finley and Bonner eat up all their minutes.

Pop will alway be Pop; he'll always stick by the "pounding the rock" mantra at all costs. If four down isn't working, just keep pounding till something gives. If Finley and Bonner aren't working now, just keep pounding till something gives. Thus, an assistant coach with strong credentials will do wonders to mix some things up and inject a breath of fresh air to the team.

This is how the spurs play on 4 days rest.
I knew hill was a joke. He's simply not ready. Now there isn't anyone to back him up. The spurs aren't going to be able to make enough midseason trades to get this team where it needs to be come playoff time. RJ is garbage. I never thought he was any good. Mcdyss was brought over for rebounds, and he's averaging 3.5 rebounds a game. Utah shredded them in the paint. The best the spurs could do was foul them.

That first quarter killed them and they never closed the gap.
Finley has to go from the starting line up. He is too easy to exploit and can't attack the basket. I would rather put Mason at the start and bring Hairston off the bench with Hill. Better defensive, explosive squad.
Use Finley when you can exploit a rookie or need a quick shot off a time out.

I thought in the long run we just missed our shots and they made theres. I also think the officiating was terrible and we couldve had a chance at the end if they didnt give them so many points off the foul line!!
