Shaq didn't bring anything. LA was getting swept out of the playoffs before Kobe became a fulltime starter and they got Phil. ps - unlike the conventional wisdom states, good teams don't win a lot more of close games than bad teams. Close games are mostly decided by luck and that's why most NBA teams, from the best to the worst, historically have similar records in close games. What differentiates good teams is their ability to have blow-out games.

Let me put in simple terms for you: winning close games is mostly a matter of luck; the quality of the team is pretty irrelevant. Hence, teams that start the season with a better record than their point differential (like the Lakers this season) tend to slow down.
