Recently, he answered some pointed questions for the Express-News.

At this point in your career, how important is it to believe your team has a legitimate shot at winning it all?

Everyone's goal is always to win a le, but realistically, there are a limited number that really can do it. All you (media) guys know that.

Of course, but I contend the Spurs and Mavs weren't legit contenders last year but improved enough over the summer to get back in the mix, and I wonder if you agree.

Oh, yeah. I think San Antonio has improved. The Lakers are still intact. They're the champs and know what it takes to win. For us, we improved. Everybody's going to talk about our age, but at the end of the day, if we can stay healthy — and that goes for the other teams, too — it's anybody's trophy.

You'll be 37 in March. Is age a good thing in the playoffs?

You want battle-tested guys; guys who have been through some games that can go either way, won or lost, and understand being down 2-0; understanding if you have lost two in a row during the season how to end a streak. I think we have guys on this team who understand that.
