Anyway, yes I am very happy. I remember similar surprising success at different points when any combination of the big 3 were out with injury. ANY win is good, especially when there is player/team development involved. We will see some of those lineups during big games. We will also see said lineups play better D.
There are so many new players, so many new/different combinations that it's gonna February to find everyone's roles. There's a pretty good chance that out of nowhere Mason's gonna light-up. Maybe it will be a certain lineup that he fits into, maybe it's just gonna take time(this is only his 2nd year, the Spurs have complicated strategies, and most of the players he got used to are gone) I don't think his career is suddenly gonna take a dip in productivity. He's been on a impressive upward slope the past few years. And even with the reduced minutes he'll almost definitely see, there's still a chance he'll produce. His breakout season in Washington two years ago was played with 9mpg LESS than his first year in San Antonio.
6 games into the season we've seen a large group of players that score in different ways. There is so much potential on both ends of the floor. Raw talent is easier to display on the offensive end. San Antonio has a rare, high level of raw talent. DeJuan Blair is the best example of it. He looks very comfortable on the glass. He has great position, anticipation, and fantastic hands. He's been able to confidently grab a ton of boards and throw in some easy buckets. Defensively, he looks like a lost little kid in a toy store...wandering almost aimlessly. I'm stating as a matter-of-fact. I'm not getting down on him. I'm constructively criticizing him exactly the same way Pop, Himself, and the whole team would. They'd say the exact same thing. Does this mean he sucks? Absolutely not. Is he the rookie of the year? Absolutely not. Can he be? YEAH. He's got great talent, and being in the most stable, organized system in the league, he has a great chance to be a very special, productive player in his rookie season.
Yes, small-ball showed glaring defensive defects. Yes, it will improve. Yes, there will be small ball in the future. No, it will not be the only style the Spurs will play.
Those 3 games last year that George Hill average 20 or so ppg seemed like a great silver lining that would develop into a good story for George(only to see Pop NOT use him end of year/playoffs,...at least he realized it and admitted) I think Pop is gonna run with anyone that shows potential this season. He knows that the Big 3 are extremely vulnerable to injury and some of our role players are in their LATE 30s. He wants everyone's game developed come April, they might be called on for post-season heroics.
I wouldn't be surprised if Tim and Tony are injured but in game condition. The only chance Pop is taking is to see if
A) George can run the team
B) We can run with the high-scoring teams like Toronto, Phoenix, Golden State, Denver, Indiana. We obviously found out we can keep up with Toronto. I think Pop remembered how Bargnani burned us last year on the perimeter and while facing Tim's health decided he'd let Bonner, McDyess, Blair, and Ratliff get more minutes
C) RJ can take a leadership role
