I'm putting in a small (75 tree) olive orchard at the ranch and just did my material takeoff and ordered the pipe for the drip irrigation system...gonna go pick it up this afternoon and haul it down...

    2600 feet of pipe!...

That's gonna take a lot of beer.

More for personal use/fun at this point. If it turns out that this first batch of grapes does well and I'm pleased with the product results I've got plenty of room to go big time if I decide to go that way.

If he has it was to get a very specific taste out of his mouth.

Olives are salting and sour with a nasty after taste. Grapes are sweet and succulent like a nice little clit. Big difference.

Not a big fan of olive picking. Two days, four hundred trees, five guineas including me.

That wasn't fun, although not as bad as clearing a 5 acre onion field.

Plus, it now ensures a 10 gallon drum of fresh olive oil shipped every November for the rest of my life.

    I love olives--kalamatas specifically.

You have a crew CC? Or are you on your own for such a big job?

I will have a pilgrim from mexico to help me...plus I'm trying to rent a trencher attachment for my cat skid loader so I'm not planning to do much pick and shovel work.

I would imagine that would have something to do with how they are brined and/or cured, and the type of olive.

sounds like a lot of money

but alot less expensive than somebody else doing it for you

unless you mean your posting up with a lawnchair and watching them do it

hence, all the beer youll need

ehh...pipe and fittings a little over $1000, the trees will be about $1000, say $500 more for equipment rental and labor...plus I'll probably high fence the area I'm putting the olives and grapes...maybe another grand there.

And no, I don't sit and watch...I will be running the skidloader/trencher and then running pipe. As for the beer, I am a professional at working and drinking at the same time. I'll probably spend the night there so I don't have to worry about driving.

Is it worth it? Heck, I don't know. I don't plan on selling anytime soon so I'm not sure how much value a mature olive orchard, fruit orchard, and vineyard will add to the value of the place when I decide to sell but I'm confident I can at least get the initial investment plus 10%/year back when it does sell.

It sure beats sitting at home and playing video games.
