His defense had a fall-off from 2001-02 to 2002-03 so drastic that the Lakers were under .500 in December and considering the Lakers didn't have a power forward, they were bounced in the second round as defending Champions. That's why Shaq recruited Karl Malone and he spear-headed the defense of the Lakers in 2003-04.
