Just something that came up on another board I frequent. People have a theory that someone who follows sports has something missing in their life or are slightly off their rocker. I'd say it's true with me, but also with millions of other people.

    edit: simplified...

I'd say we just like to be entertained versus in a constant state of anger over BS politics...or fear and war mongering...surely no loose screws there...but that can be said whether we follow porn, politics, or sports....

let those CHICKEN HAWKS know I said it....

People like sports because it's entertaining, just like people like movies or music.

It's difficult for non-sports followers to understand the excitement we got from watching millionaires in shorts running after a ball.
But we know that feeling cannot be found in music, or movies. It's something else, and I'm glad I get to experience this.

I don't feel that people who follow sports are missing something in their life. You could say that about anybody, anywhere, who's in to almost anything.

Here's what I think, and it's just an opinion, no facts or science or research going into this. Just an opinion.

Yes. Sport and the thrill of compe ion could probably go back to the thrill of survival, hunting, and the adrenaline of having to fight to survive. Deep in the genetic code, we all probably have a little bit of that innate desire to overpower and dominate someone else, something else in order to survive. But now we don't need to do that to survive in that way. We can buy combo meals at a fast food place in order to eat. We don't have to mark territory because we can live in the same neighborhood.

What used to make life so exciting was when you had to fight to stay alive. It's still that way for most of the rest of the animal kingdom. But civilization and technology changed that for man. Sport is the extreme dumbed-down version today. And that's why we get a little thrill out of sports and the compe ion.

Yea, something is missing. But, then again, some of the people who don't turn to sports are the ones doing crazy like shooting up people.

Given the absolute disgust/sadness/bewilderment I felt after the Pats lost to the Colts, I'd say there's definitely something wrong with me.

Yep, can't beat it with a stick. Its totally meaningless. Why then does it hold such prominence?

In my opinion, sports (as far as watching, not playing) are a place where stupid people can bring to the public forefront their misplaced aggression towards their ideas of black and white (extremist) self manufactured evil, division and chauvinism towards their slice of the country and generally live a fantasy/feel a connection through/to their personal idols, an extension of what they probably do in their daily lives. It gives smart people a chance to create the same ideals mentioned above that they would otherwise not give the same nod to in their everyday routine, become part of the masses and feel perfectly morally fine about being "us vs. them" for a few hour a week. It's everyone's chance to be take a side and know that it's your right to hate every rival you face (and in some cases respect them too). Like enjoying a yearly war without all the muddy ethical dilemma and death of the smote. Just about as expensive, though.
