So i was chekcing my Fantasy Basketball team and i havent noticed how similar the stats of these two were. Not bad considering that Howard is argueably the best center in the league at the moment. Also, Howard is suppose to be superior defensively compared to Bynum. Keep in mind that Bynum also averages 4 mins more per game.

Take it for what its worth:

PLAYER FG% FT% REB AST STL BLK PTS
    Howard .625 .576 11.1 1.4 0.7 1.7 17.4
    Bynum .579 .767 10.9 1.3 0.6 1.7 19.7

No knock on Bynum, but I'd take Dwight. His offense isn't as polished, but he'd be great on the Lakers. A guy who just goes out there and grabs boards and plays D.

The difference is that Dwight is the main guy on the Magic (despite VC always wanting the spotlight). It would be interesting to see if Bynum was the #1 option on the Lakers.

Both guys have so much size that pretty much noone can guard them downlow one on one successfully.

are you saying that Bynum will have better numbers if he were to take Howards place in the Magic?

He could do, it depends on how he handles being #1. I was suggesting that it would interesting to see if he would produce more with more focus, or if he would produce less on another team because opposing teams wouldn't have to worry about possibly doubling Kobe.

Dwight seems like one of those freaks that never gets injured. You gotta take him over Bynum.

Having said that, Bynum is a much better post scorer at this point. He's also drawing a ton a fouls this year and hits his free throws at reliable %.

I had no idea that Bynum (3rd option) was scoring more than Dwight although less accurately at 58%.

The rest of the stats are pretty much a wash. Both are also top 10 in blocks and rebounds.

Statistically, Dwight is way down so far this year... I should know, because he was my 1st rounder in 2 fantasy teams (one roto, one h2h).

This is Dwight's line last year:

    35.7 0.572 0.594 Rbs 13.8 Asts 1.4 Stls 1.0 Blks 2.9 TOs 3.04 PF 3.42 Pts 20.6

This year he is playing 5 fewer minutes, mostly because his foul rate is way up to 4.07 per contest.

Work it out, Dwight. I need you back at full speed!

Dwight's stats arent only down because his minutes are down - his production per minute is down too. You can probably put that down to constantly being in foul trouble and not being able to get into a rythm, and play aggressively on offense and defense, because of fear of picking up another foul and going back to the bench. Like Ruff said, looking at last season, he's raw numbers were much better obviously because he played more minutes, but his per minute stats were better too.... he's just had an awful time with the whistle this year.

Bynum's stats look impressive aswell, once he catches the ball anywhere near the rim he is pretty much unplayable, because he has so much size - but he also has the footwork which allows him to manouvre himself into good positions to score after a catch in the post. Dwight on the other hand relies on sheer strength and athleticism to go through his man, which is probly why he picks up more offensive fouls than Bynum.

Ill compare per 36 minute stats from basketball-reference. Obviously it doesnt mean Player A > Player B because his per minute numbers are better, but i just want to be able to show how good Oden has been while he has been on the court. Once he figures out how to avoid so many fouls, he could be something else.

    Dwight Howard - 20.0 PTS, 12.8 RBS, 1.6 AST, 2.0 BLK

    Andrew Bynum - 19.4 PTS, 10.7 RBS, 1.2 AST, 1.6 BLK

    Greg Oden - 16.6 PTS, 12.4 RBS, 1.1 AST, 3.4 BLK

And just for old times sake....

    Tim Duncan - 20.0 PTS, 12.7 RBS, 3.8 AST, 1.8 BLK

Keep in mind Bynum plays with Gasol and Odom two really good rebounds who grab almost 10 boards a night themselves. I wonder how many boards Bynum would pull down if he was playing alongside Matt Bonner.

    Ill keep that in mind...

Meanwhile, you keep in mind these stats...

Rebound Rate (Rebounds grabbed per 100 possessions)

    Lamar Odom - 14.0
    -------------------------------
    Matt Bonner - 13.6
    Antonio McDyess - 15.8

Meaning the rebounding next to Duncan >>> the rebounding next to Bynum.

    Ill give you some more..

    Tim Duncan - 20.5
    Andrew Bynum - 15.9

So thanks for bringing that up, and allowing me to show that Duncan's rebounding is even more superior than the raw stats showed.

3 and he grabbed 16 boards last game. Bynum's boards will continue to drop beneath the others as the games go on cause of Gasol and Odom.

I was comparing the stats so far this season, and in three games back Gasol would not have affected Bynum's rebounding that much....

Anyway, in those 3 games, Byunum has taken 25 rebounds in 85 minutes.... or about 11 rebounds per 36 minutes, which is right on line with his production before Gasol played a game, in fact it might be fractionally higher (i couldnt be bothered using a calculator).

Bynum's numbers might eventually go downwith Gasol back, i dont know. But the OP made the comparison so far this season, and thats what i was doing.
