Well, my mind knows Auburn will probably lose, but my heart bleeds orange and blue and is hoping for an Auburn victory.

Will the refs Auburn over if the game is close, even though the game is @Auburn?

Will Ingram run all over the weak AU defense?

Will the ty Chris Todd show up, or the even tier chris todd show up?

Can Ben Tate run the ball on the Bammer D?

Can Auburn get some pressure on McElroy??

Here's an article on the history of the game:

There are many great college football rivalries. That’s what Saturday’s in the Fall are meant for. But, which is the biggest all-time NCAA college football rivalry? To determine that, you need to look at how important the game, and rivalry, are the fans of each team. And, no rivalry splits friend, neighbors, spouses; an entire state, at the seams, like the Alabama – Auburn rivalry.

Whether you are an Auburn Tiger or Alabama Crimson Tide fan can depend on a mul ude of factors. Certainly if you live closer to one or the other school – that is an important factor. And the closer you are; the more likely you will be a fan of that school.

But, there are so many other factors. Maybe you had a family member attend one or the other school. Maybe you had a family member kicked out of one or the other school.

Maybe your family has a strong tradition of supporting one or the other. Maybe you just like Crimson or Burnt Orange.

There’s just not telling why. The point is you do. And the problem is you may have other close friends or relatives that support the other team.

The intensity of the rivalry runs so deep that marriages, families, and friends may be momentarily separated on game days. Certainly separation is probably the best option during the Iron Bowl itself.

This photo is of the first Alabama - Auburn game in February 1893. You can see the intensity from the start of this great rivalry. It was written that after Auburn scored a 65 yard touchdown in that game "it required several minutes to clear the field." Thanks to Historic Photos of University of Alabama Football for this picture. You can purchase the book at:

In Alabama, football is a religion. Most Alabama youngsters eat, breathe, sleep, and dream football. And all real Alabamians either believe in the University of Alabama Crimson Tide or the Auburn University Tigers. Nothing else really matters.

Certainly not on Iron Bowl Saturday.
The Iron Bowl is the name given to the annual Auburn-Alabama game. It is always in late November and is the last regular season game for both teams. The victor (and its fans) win bragging rights over the loser (and its fans) for an entire (long) year.

Since Auburn and Alabama have traditionally been college football powers, the results of the Iron Bowl have often played a decisive role in determining who won the Southeastern Conference (SEC) football championship; and, since 1992, who represents the Western Division in the SEC Championship Game.

The history and rivalry in this game are so strong, that an Iron Bowl win can turn an otherwise lousy season into a not-so-bad one. And, a loss can work the opposite way.

Shot of Auburn War Eagle before 2007 Iron Bowl.
Thanks to Alabama Geographer for the photo .

The history of the Iron Bowl goes all the way back to the first time Alabama and Auburn met on the gridiron. That first battle took place February 22, 1893 at Lakeview Park in Birmingham, Alabama. Auburn won that first match-up 32-22 in front of an estimated crowd of 2,000.

After the first few games, the rivalry was suspended for a number of years due to financial limitations.

Annual play resumed in 1948 with a humiliating 55-0 Crimson Tide trouncing of the Tigers. Since then, the series has seen everything. Shutouts, long win streaks for each team, and some of the best football coaching and playing -- ever.

Through the 2006 season, Alabama has won the most Iron Bowls, holding a 38-32-1 series advantage. Alabama win streaks include the years 1950-1953, 1959-1962, 1964-1968, and, 1973-1981. Auburn win streaks include the years 1954-1958, 1986-1989, and 2002-2006.

Fireworks go off after Auburn's 2005 Iron Bowl victory over Alabama.
Thanks Jason McCay at flickr.com for the picture .

By the way, Sports Illustrated ranked the Auburn - Alabama rivalry as the second biggest rivalry in the world of sports. It ranked behind only the Boston Red Sox - New York Yankees rivalry.

So, the most prestigious sports publication in the world agrees with us that Auburn – Alabama is the biggest all-time college football rivalry.

    thanks man!

Man, I get so ing pumped up for this game. An hour is too long to wait

    keys from chris low/espn
    Alabama

Spreading the wealth: Quarterback Greg McElroy has done a much better job of that the past few weeks and has connected on big plays to a number of guys, including Julio Jones, Marquis Maze and Darius Hanks. With the Crimson Tide spreading the ball around to different players, the Tigers won’t be able to concentrate on Mark Ingram as much.

Shutting down Tate: The Alabama defense has been stingy against the run all season and has now gone 31 games without allowing a 100-yard rusher, the longest such streak in the country. Not allowing Auburn running back Ben Tate to get started means quarterback Chris Todd is going to be in a lot of third-and-long situations, which is where Alabama’s defense is lethal.

Playing well early: The last thing Alabama wants to do is give Auburn a reason to believe it can win, and more importantly, give the Jordan-Hare Stadium crowd hope. A fast start by the Crimson Tide takes the fans out of the game and allows the Tide to play at their place, running it when they want to and throwing it when they want to.

    AUBURN

Forcing McElroy to beat them: That’s easier said than done, because it requires shutting down Mark Ingram and the Crimson Tide’s running game. McElroy has shown that he can throw the ball this season, but he’s yet to be in a position against an SEC defense where he has to bring a team back in the second half from a double-digit deficit. The Tigers would like to put him in that position.

Red-zone defense: Auburn has been the worst team in the league when it comes to red zone defense. Alabama has struggled to score touchdowns once it gets into the red zone. The Tigers have to make sure that continues. They have a chance to win this game if Leigh Tiffin is finishing Alabama drives by kicking field goals. They have no chance to win if Ingram and Julio Jones are the ones finishing drives.

Quick strikes: Nobody has taken the ball and consistently driven the ball against Alabama’s defense all season. That’s probably not going to change now. The Crimson Tide are just too strong up the middle. What that means for Auburn is that somebody, be it Darvin Adams, Mario Fannin, Onterio McCalebb or Terrell Zachery, needs to come up with a few big plays to soften up that Alabama defense.

AUBURN, Ala. -- It was 20 years ago that the Iron Bowl came to Auburn’s campus for the first time.

The party’s been going on ever since.

Even on Black Friday, everything in this state just sort of stops when Auburn and Alabama get together on the football field.

And, yes, that includes the traffic.

Some four hours before kickoff, there was a mile backup on Interstate 85 as cars tried to make their way to the Plains via Exit 51.

Make no mistake. This is a rivalry that rages 365 days a year in the state of Alabama.

It’s been known to divide neighbors, best friends, even families.

But not always, which is one of the things that makes this rivalry so unique.

Everywhere you looked Friday, there were patches of orange, blue and crimson mixed together, tailgating and “game-planning” for THE game in the state of Alabama.

And as you get closer to Jordan-Hare Stadium, you even see a few couples walking hand-in-hand -- the man wearing orange and blue from head to toe and the woman sporting a houndstooth scarf and crimson skirt.

Wonder who the kids pull for?

The Auburn players have been milling around on the field for the last several minutes in their warm-up suits, having just made their way to the stadium in the Tiger Walk.

One of the highlights of the Tiger Walk is always assistant coach Trooper Taylor, who’s chest-bumping fans, high-fiving fans and waving that ever-present towel.

The Auburn students are already packed into their seats in the stadium, a good hour and a half prior to kickoff.

Give it another hour, and this place will be bedlam.

It always is this time of year.
