I still believe in the Spurs. I have been a fan since 1988. Last time I checked they still had Duncan, Ginobili and Parker on the roster.

They are my team so I still believe. Been a fan too long and been through too many downs not to stick with this particular group that have given me so much joy and what I once thought would never happen in my lifetime has happened 4 times. I sitll believe they can pull out a fifth one, they've surprised me before.

I still think this is a le contending team. The rebounding is there finally. The talent is there. They finally are getting great bench production from the bigs in Bonner and Blair. Jefferson has been a huge disappointment and this has been a horrifying start to the year, but by far the biggest problems have been the health of Parker and Ginobili. Give them some time to get healthy and I think this can be a of a team, even if Richard can only get 12-13 ppg in this offense.

I believe it's too early to write the team off. I believe the team's confidence is at an all time low, and I also believe that is probably due largely to Manu's and RJ's struggles - with those two failing, the team only has one penetrator (TP), and he is not at full-speed either.

I also believe it's time to start exploring a trading Manu or RJ.

    Who wants RJ's contract?

Why would anyone want Jefferson with the way he is playing? More likely Ginobili bc of his expiring contract. But I would be against trading Ginobili.

Probably no-one, but maybe someone who wants capspace in 2011. Also, RJ could still put up 20ppg on the right team - he just doesn't fit here. He needs the ball in his hands to succeed, and that's just not going to happen on the Spurs.

The bigger question is what could be gotten for a Manu that seriously looks like he's lost a step. His expiring contract makes him pretty attractive, I guess.

What are you going to get for Manu when he's shooting 37% and has been worthless the previous two playoffs? I'd rather hold onto him and hope he can stay healthy than sell low for pennies on the dollar. Jefferson's got a huge expiring in 2011 though, so I could see the Spurs being able to move him if they take a worse contract off someone's hands.

Manu's an expiring contract for the big 2010 off-season..we can get something significant for him, especially if he's packaged with Mason and/or Finley..

    $10.725mil expiring.

I did say "explore options" - if we can't get something really nice for him I wouldn't trade him.

And yeah, how about benching Bogans for a while and giving some minutes to Hairston. It is sink or swim time for this team, time to trust in the youth.

I don't think you blow up the team until you've seen everyone healthy for awhile and they still aren't elite. Injuries and health are everything in sports, and with Parker and Ginobili both still recovering the Spurs need a lot of work.

Imagine this same team with Parker and Ginobili playing the way they are capable of. There is a better chance of that happening than getting better by making a trade.

I forgot about adding Finley's and Mason's deals in. Who specifically would you be after?

Problem is, I don't think Manu is going to get much better. His ability to penetrate declined last year, and has pretty much disappeared this year. Sadly, I think he's lost a step and that takes away the quality that makes him a standout and a special player. I hate to say it because he's one of my favourite players of all time. I hope I'm wrong.

I'm not worried about TP. He's slowly rounding into some shape.

Spurs enjoying bench boost, Jeff McDonald 11/25/09:
Heading into tonight's game against Golden State, the Spurs' reserves can lay legitimate argument to the le “Best Bench in the NBA.”

Anchored by ascending point guard George Hill, the Spurs' bench ranks second in the league in scoring (43 points per game) and first in rebounding (19.3 per game) and assists (9.5 per game).

A couple of years ago Ray Allen looked finished after multiple ankle injuries. But eventually he got it together and was a durable elite performer for the Celtics. It takes a long time to fully recover the power and eplosiveness after going so long without it. I think Ginobili still could get it together and be a force again.

That's the problem, I have no idea. Currently thinking about it, but there's really no-one out there who I'd both want and their team wants to get rid of to hire a veteran for a year.

OJ Mayo might fit, but no way they do that. James Harden would be perfect, but that ain't happening either.

I guess he stays and we cross our fingers.

As for RJ, he's just as bad to try and find a fit for. However, that's why there is a front office. Love to see Gomes as a Spur.

Hmm. I think that team is the Spurs on any given night and often, if the cir stances are right; this ties in with the answer to the following statement:

The bigger question is what could be gotten for a Manu that seriously looks like he's lost a step. His expiring contract makes him pretty attractive, I guess.

I'm right there with you with Manu. I love him but the team must come first. He still has game, I believe.. while his health is definitely questionable, and he seems to lost some athleticism, his expiring contract should be enough.

The good part about is we hold all the cards: if we don't find any suitable trading partners, we can always just rest him as much as needed for a playoff run. Hopefully he will stay healthy during the season, and play big in that run, but if not, he ends up posting mediocre stats in a contract year - and hopefully that'd be enough for us to resign him cheaper.

However, I'm not sure I like Manu in the future of the Spurs. Not unless he can prove right now, this season and playoffs, his health issues are behind him. He's actually got about 70 days to prove that, if you ask me.
