hey man u sure that rom drive is dvd rom also?
try checking the plugs, remove and reset the plug...install drivers
or look for new one....
My CD/DVD drive won't read DVD's. It reads CD's just fine. But whenever I put in a DVD, the drive kinda hums for a second like it's doing something, then does nothing. It won't recognize that a DVD is even in there.
I really don't know crap about computers other than the basics, so any help would be appreciated. My computer has Windows Vista, which is probably my first problem, but let me know. Thanks, I love you all.

You fuggin assholes with your computers.
Laptop or Desktop?
The humming sound usually is the ROM trying to match the speed of the disc.
If it hums and doesn't read it could be the speed of the dvd. check your ROM see if it says 16X or 32X if your disc was recorded on 48 X and you have a 32X speed ROM it may not show up. find another disc recorded in a slower speed.
test it out. And when you buy blank discs try and make sure they have the same umber as the rom 52X etc....I tossed out may discs in the past thinking they was corrupted.
You don't know what the you are talking about.
Having said that, if you've been able to read DVD's in the past without issues, you might want to try cleaning the lens.
it's a desktop.
And yeah it's recognized DVD's in the past. I've never tried playing a burned DVD, just standard DVD's like It's Always Sunny In Philadephia and such.

You're welcome.
I second this. Probably the lens are out of whack, but it's not worth fixing these things at the price they sell for these days.
Just buy a new one and swap it in. You're probably going to get a faster drive to boot.
great deal, I may pick one up too.
was thinking about waiting a little while, and getting a blu-ray burner though. except the discs are damn expensive.
here's what you do...
disable windows burning! there's a conflict with permissions.

you can thank me later.
i had the same problem at work yesterday and all fixed now.
oh so you're going to suggest buying new hardware? how savvy of you mr know-it-all.
Yes, because buying a $30 DVD burner is equivalent to replacing an $80 internal hard drive that's full of data.![]()
Your troubleshoot is fail.
you missed the point dip ! don't try calling others out for suggesting to buy this or that and then do the same a month or so down the line. hypocrite !
you're just a punkass. nothing more, nothing less. go get your willy wet playing some gay ass mmorpg assbull game.
At least I don't look like Ricky Ricardo.
You mean having shown everyone your a head.Having said that,
Since your such cool geek kinda fella that knows so much I challenge you to show up at the next ST gtg I will bring a disc burned at 52X speed and you bring a laptop with a 48 X speed Rom and if it plays I will give you 100.00 cash if it doesn't play you get to suck on my huge TRoll .if you've been able to read DVD's in the past without issues, you might want to try cleaning the lens.
wait why would I reward you for being wrong?...Having said that, so are you going to take your balls out of Lucy's purse and bring your Ricky Ricardo looking best buy expert ass to the next gtg?

In his original post he never mentioned the ROM played perfectly before so stick that radio shack pocket protector up your crusty self owned ass!Today's fastest write-speeds are usually 48X, but 52X rated discs are also available. Today's fastest rated discs can burn at up to 52x speeds on 52x capable writers.
In order to burn at a given speed, your CD burner must be able to work at that speed. Placing a 52X disc in a 32X speed Rom will almost cause malfunctions.
You'd be out 100.00 because it just doesn't work that way.
As to the OP, if it won't read an original DVD that it has read before you should replace it, however if it does you likely have some other issue such as a bad burn, or media incompatibility.
Is that a yes?
Is what a yes? It just doesn't work that way.
A 32X drive will read a 52X disk perfectly fine, it just won't read it at 52X, it will read it at 32X.
As far as burning, a 32X drive would burn a 52X CD fine it just wouldn't do it at 52X it would do it at 32X.
Please tell me this isn't a Mouse troll. I always thought you were reasonably computer literate.
So then you have no problem bringing the laptop to the next gtg? I will bring a disc burned at 52X prove me wrong.
If your not busy I would like to the see the quotes or the topics of these guys saying one thing and now another.
Thanks!![]()
