Caldwell made the move to sit Manning & Co. after taking a 15-10 lead with 5:36 left in the third quarter, focused on a Super Bowl run rather than regular-season perfection. But to the fans at Lucas Oil Stadium, who wanted to send players to Buffalo with a chance to match New England’s perfect 2007 regular season, it clearly mattered.

“Indianapolis earned the right to do whatever they want,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “That’s a heck of a football team. We were just going to line up and play, one way or the other. Whoever was in a Colts uniform was who we were going to play against.”

Don Shula’s 1972 Miami Dolphins remained the only NFL team to go an entire season undefeated.

“While the Jets’ win today ended Indianapolis’ streak and showed once again how difficult it is to go undefeated, I want to congratulate the Colts on a great run,” Shula said. “Peyton Manning proved once again this season why he is one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL and it was certainly no surprise to see him lead the Colts to an NFL-record 23 straight victories.”

On the second series the starters sat out, fans started booing. The boos grew louder with each play, reaching a crescendo when Manning’s replacement, Curtis Painter(notes), was hit by Calvin Pace(notes) while setting to throw and lost the ball. Jets defensive end Marques Douglas(notes) fell on it and rolled into the end zone for the go-ahead score with 1:29 left in the third quarter.

“It was an unfortunate situation, he hit me right at the right time to force the fumble,” said Painter, who added that the booing didn’t bother him.

With Manning, Reggie Wayne(notes), Dallas Clark(notes) and Joseph Addai(notes) out, that was all the Jets needed to take over.

New York sealed it with two fourth-quarter scores—a 43-yard field goal from Jay Feely(notes) and a 1-yard TD run from Thomas Jones(notes).

As the clock wound down, some fans were silent and many left. Those who stayed booed as players shook hands, an odd way to end the record-setting 23-game streak.

“I’m disappointed,” Manning said. “There were some chances, I think, to do some things better out there. The turnover and the kickoff return, those are plays that we haven’t given up this year and when you do, it’s hard to win. So we’ve got some things to get corrected and that will be the plan starting tomorrow.”

I'd be upset too. You watch your team mostly for championships, but also to make history. Has the Colts history of shutting down late in the season helped them much? Teams that play hard leading up to the playoffs tend to do just as well.

This Colts team earned the right to decide they wanted to rest. They won 14 straight games and clinched home field. The fans at the game today were pretty ty with their booing, just because you get to 14-0 doesn't mean you have some god given duty to go for 19-0. Undefeated season talk is for the fans, which is obviously why it's a big deal to some Colts fans that they shut it down in this game the way they did. But the team has its own goals, and obviously an undefeated season is not one of them. You need a healthy team to win in the playoffs and that's what the Colts want to have.

Plus 17-1 is more embarrassing than 16-2 (or 15-3).

Now that watching Peyton go 19-0 isn't an issue, you'd seriously rather watch the Chargers win a superbowl than the Colts?

If this wasn't a veteran team that had been there before, then I could see the momentum argument, but I have no worries about Manning and crew all of a sudden getting lazy in practice and not being ready once the games start mattering again. Booing a team for doing the smart thing is ridiculous.
They tanked in 2005 and got beat in the first round. They tanked in 2007 and again got beat in the first round.

The year they won the Super Bowl they played wire-to-wire IIRC. Maybe that's a coincidence, maybe it isn't.

No question they earned the right to tank. They're still es for doing it. And the fans have every right to boo. They paid good money to see Peyton Manning and Co., not the scrubs.

I'd rather they both suck it long and hard, but it's a tough call. I like Philip Rivers and wouldn't mind seeing him get a ring, unfortunately that also means punk LT would get one too.

On the other hand, another ring for Manning would fuel even further the ridiculous "Greatest Ever! Better Than Montana! More Amazing Than Jesus!" bull .

Considering dip s are gonna call Manning the GOAT simply for sucking less than Rex Grossman in one game, I guess it won't matter if he wins a second. Go Colts.

the Chargers still have the mental edge after knocking them off two years in a row and are the hottest team in the league right now.

Any team starting Phillip Rivers at QB doesn't have the "mental edge" over anything.

Rivers is mentally strong. What are you talking about? Playing vs NE in 2008 should take away all his doubters. If you're dissing anything other than his at ude, you are a hater.

The lack of mental edge is because of their head coach, not their QB.

Damn, I can't stand Phillip Rivers almost as much as I can't stand LT, but regardless of that, I'd much rather have people like JT, Dirk, Spursfanfirst and Stretch gloating about the Colts than people like gs, Ducks and the SoCal bro gots who couldn't get into USC so they went to U of A gloating about the Chargers winning.

    Rivers is mentally strong.

I think there's a difference between mentally strong and being an arrogant prick who acts y to cover up how mentally weak he really is.

Mentally weak is Cutler. Cutler and Rivers are like complete opposites on the football fiel when it comes to leadership. Cutler will sit there and whine. Rivers is gonna tell your ass to run a better route and what exactly to do.

in my opinion he seems like he's just a guy who likes to have fun, his talk seems lighthearted to me, he doesn't appear to do it in a serious got way. Kinda like Chad Ochocinco and the celebrations. At least that's how I see it. But I can understand why people wouldn't like it.

Maybe you're right, I think being on San Diego makes me biased against him, I just didn't like how he acted an ass taunting fans at the end of their playoff game against Indy in 2007.
