Today Lebron James will celebrate his 25th birthday at home against the Atlanta Hawks. Hard to believe this man is only 25 years old. I can hear the Kobe fans now saying Lebron hasn't won a championship yet, but the wait won't be too long.
In a total of 505 games, Lebron James is averaging 27.6 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 6.8 APG. That's pretty good considering he has only been in the league for seven years. He broke the Cavaliers scoring record in 2008 and is currently just shy of 14,000 career points. Since entering the league, Lebron has created a rap sheet of awards.
-Naismith Prep Player of the Year (2003)
-NBA Rookie of the Year (2004)
-NBA All Rookie First Team (2004)
-NBA All-Star (2005-2009)
-NBA All-Star Game MVP (2006, 2008)
-All NBA Second Team (2005, 2007)
-All NBA First Team (2006, 2008, 2009)
-NBA Scoring Champion (2008)
-All Defensive First Team (2009)
-NBA Most Valuable Player (2009)
-Bronze Medalist 2004 Summer Olympics
-Bronze Medalist 2006 FIBA World Championship
-Gold Medalist 2007 FIBA Americas Championship
-Gold Medalist 2008 Summer Olympics
The fact that he is in the running for most of these awards every year is a tribute to his success. He is often compared to Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and other NBA Hall of Famers and most definitely will fit in with those players at the end of his career.
Unlike many sportswriters, I refuse to compare him to a Michael Jordan or Kobe. Every player is unique and has different attributes. Both Michael and Kobe play different positions than Lebron, and Michael rose to fame in a different era. The fact that he is being compared to these players before his career is even half over is a testament to his accomplishments so far.
I don't think he is anything like Kobe or Mike, but more of his own breed. Lebron is knocked constantly for not having won a championship yet in his career. I always preach that basketball is a five man sport, and it always will be. Lebron himself proved in 2007 that you can't win a championship alone.
The future of the NBA most certainly rests in the hands of Lebron James. Several mortals will try to impede the King in his attempt rule the sovereign league, but his tenacity will forsake those unworthy of his superiority.
