Donate it to a church or charity. You seem to have everything you need as far as pcs/storage go. So why not. Plus you can write it off on your taxes.
Hey everyone, I need some ideas of what to do with an old laptop. I have a 3 year old laptop that still runs great. It has an Intel Core2Duo chip (the first cheapest ones T series I think). 2 gb of RAM, 160 GB hard drive, on board graphics, DVD burner, etc. The only thing wrong with it really is the battery won't hold a charge, so it is basically a small desktop. I had been letting my stepdaughter use it, but her grandparents bought her a netbook for Christmas (I dont know why, she is 12 and as I said, the laptop works fine). I currently have Windows 7 on it. I thought about selling it when I got my new laptop, but since the battery wasn't working I didn't think I could get much out of it. I have thought about buying a new battery then selling it, but it doesn't seem like a good idea because I don't think that the laptop's value would be increased by the cost of the battery. I am trying to figure out if there are any ideas that yall have to utilize it somehow in my home network to do something. I have just purchased a 2TB NAS, so I don't really need the storage too terribly and I don't want to just give it away. Anyone have any ideas??

That is an option, and I will keep it in mind. (I know this sound like it, but it is not an outright rejection, I hadnt thought of it)
What about a server of some sort, what can I do with a server that would be beneficial? I am basically an unknowledgable technophile. I like to use old equipment to try to teach myself, but I have to see some benefit to going through that effort, you know?
You could use it for a porn machine.
Use it as a streaming media server, get a nice big external drive and fill it with movies and music to stream around your house.
Just sell it on Craigslist, you don't need it.

The media idea is crossed off because my 2 TB NAS is also a DLNA certified Media server.
what brand is it? there are many uses for it. you can use it to help others recover their data or do virus flushes with it. you can use it for spare parts RAM HD key pad screen video card wifi card etc...people on eBay might need that certain model for the motherboard and already have a good battery. I have a few notebooks lying around but not enough to get anything running. If it's a dell I can buy it from you when my girlfriend gets her tax return she uses the over night one so it comes as soon as the W-2s are there.
I used to fix PCs I found in the trash as a hobby and give them away to kids who make A's in school, maybe Bs depending on there grades before. I just don't find some poor dumb kid and give them a PC I find a smart kid who really wants to do good in school. most of them they come from a poor area of town. If you want I can give you the numbers to some teachers. I used to help some of the churches and I gave away Pcs to the battered women's shelter. you have to hand the PC in the hands of the person you want to help. If not someone from the organization will keep the PC for themselves or give it to a friend. Stay away from GoodWill its a scam. I worked for them at one time.
I still keep in touch with many families and kids who are now in collage or joined the service. many of them I taught photo shop. If you live in SA we can find a family that is willing to purchase the battery and we can give it to one of their kids. I load the PC with the Full 600.00 office with web page maker etc...I put basic photo shop and CS3, cool 3D studio, total video converter,sometimes I put Rosetta stone and many other programs. The kid may not have the newest laptop on the block but its loaded with the best around.
I am no computer expert, I have no training, and I try not to belittle others who don't know basic things like how to use a FTP server or host a picture in there posts etc... but I do get a certain satisfaction of knowing I made a difference in someones life.

This is an interesting idea. It is a gateway laptop, and even though it is not the newest, like I said, it still runs great outside of the battery.
Edit: I just found out that gateway had a battery recall for computers which were shipped around the time I got my laptop. I have to check the part number and may be able to get a new battery for free.
Having a spare laptop can come in handy when you download a game or a program and you don't want to infect your main PC. Also you can use it in editing music and videos.
You can even ask mouse if he will trade you one of his rare signed art prints for it since his stuff got stolen this month. He is donating all prosceeds to the Elf

I'd read your earlier posts about the hardware you have, so I feel pretty confident in saying you don't need it. Sounds like you're trying to find some cool usage for it that you haven't thought of yet, but when you already have a lot of cool it's hard to come up with anything else.
So would you rather have 200.00 or so to spend on something else, or would you rather donate it to a worthy cause?
I don't know what position you are in financially but it would be cooler than anything else you could come up with to donate it to someone/place that could use it, maybe the battered women's shelter.

Getting sick and not thinking about it again until just now. The battery is not part of the recall so I will likely donate it.
