ing even Dampier smoked a 3 in our faces in that period... Spurs couldn't get a stop to save their life. I mean, sure, the Mavs were smoking hot, but this is the farthest thing from championship defense I've ever seen since the phoenix suns

    What happened out there guys....

Tough to defend when you don't have the tools to do it, especially in the paint..look at the Mavs shot chart, the majority of their points came from the FT line and below..

the Spurs were 23rd in the NBA at defending the paint coming into this game, it'll probably go down after allowing all those points inside tonight..no way you can win a le like that..

I guess Coach Bud still has much to learn from Obi-Pop.

2 of those 3's that started the Mavnots final runs were right in front of Dice. He didn't close out or didn't fight the screen tough enough.

I ain't a fan of Zack ref. Damp is an offensive tackle dresses as a Mavnot. Anyone of those can be called and should have been.

But hey, the Spurs were up by 13 and didn't come to decapitate. It's like those scenes in Friday the 13th or the Nightmare on Elm Street series...when the dead guy is down, don't assume he's dead...Park a semi on his chest so even if still alive, they cannot escape.

Bonner defended Dirk better than Dice did. At least Bonner makes him work for every shot.

RJ was defending Dirk as well as you could..no idea why they brought in Dice to defend him in the 4th, it got Dirk going..

    Dice has been a dissapointment
Tony was invisible in the 2nd half
Manu was invisible in the 2nd half
DEFENSE was invisible in the 4th quarter

Disgusting end to a game that showed promise in so many areas. I can't believe the Spurs could be SO good in the third with their energy and then come out in the fourth and just lay an egg.

The most glaring difference at the end for me was how easily the Mavs shed the defender off screens. Granted at times you concede and switch, but it didn't seem like the Spurs had any "fight" in them during that last quarter. The Mavs saw it and exploited it, running ball screens on almost every possessions and taking advantage of the mismatch.

Yes there were plenty of positives in the game, but it ended in a loss and such a terrible display in the final stanza I can only think of two words...ugly and depressing.

I could have sworn Dirk got hot when RJ was guarding him. The Spurs are going to need another big in the rotation if they want to compete. If only they had a young seven foot shot blocker somewhere.

absolutely pathetic performance in the 4th. this team needs to shape up now or it's 1 and done again. no confidence, no consistency, not beating the best teams.

The defensive intensity has been a topic of discussion throughout the season. The proverbial 'getting a stop when you need a stop'. And yes, I'm including defensive rebounding (for those that missed the game thread). Because when we finally got a stop or they missed, we couldn't grab the board.

We needto take more pride in defending the ball. And it should start with the coaching staff. I hope Pop used this sabbatical to take a look to his team from a different angle and regain the reins of this team. If we don't make major strides defensively (with or without a trade), we're not going anywhere...

Dirk got hot by capitalizing on defensive breakdowns, not by any one player in one-on-one defense. Plus, you can't expect a player that talented to continue to shoot 20% from the floor.

They brought in a long shot-blocker, albeit not young, in Ratliff...and he lasted a few minutes before proving ineffective.

The reality is that the great players in this league from time to time can prove to be unguardable. In the 4th quarter Dirk was a little bit of that, and the Spurs had TEAM defense breakdowns.

No one player, young shot-blocker or otherwise, would've changed that.

A legit big WOULD have significantly helped though..most of the Mavs points came from the free throw line and below..they killed us on the offensive glass..

Dirk did get hot, but that obviously wasn't the main reason we lost..

This team desperately needs a legit big..23rd in points allowed in the paint per game and going down after this game just won't cut it on any level..

It's probably tougher than last year, because with this team you actually see the glimpses of how good they can be on both ends of the floor, but they just can't put it together for four quarters against the better teams in the league.

Last year, I think most of us saw the writing on the wall...this year it's just frustrating as .

The only thing that keeps me watching...I think this team will eventually get that consistency (Rodeo Road Trip?) and push into the playoffs strong and confident.

    Believe!

I see 5 in/near the paint, 5 from mid-range and 5 from deep....that's not "most of the Mavs points" in the paint.
