Rockets, McGrady Involved in a Bevy of Trade Rumors
    SportingNews

When you have an expiring contract like Tracy McGrady’s $23-million-per-year deal, you’re going to get mentioned in a lot of rumors. So naturally, the Rockets are at the center of this Chris Broussard report on TrueHoop:

Washington, which league executives believe is in cost-cutting mode after the Gilbert Arenas disaster, could have McGrady for a deal featuring Caron Butler and some expiring contracts, perhaps Mike Miller and Randy Foye.

With the Wizards on the brink of a fire sale and holding several contracts that could make a deal work, it makes sense that they’d be able to work out a deal for McGrady. The issue for Houston, though, is whether or not they think Butler is a good enough secondary star to pair with Yao. The expiring deals would allow them to pick up another player in free agency, but with Yao’s health now a continual question mark, the Rockets’ window is closing.

Broussard also mentions a possible deal with the Sixers for Andre Iguodala and Samuel Dalembert, but Iggy has four years left on a big contract and is in the same star middle ground as Butler. There’s also talk of a swap with Chicago for Kirk Hinrich and Tyrus Thomas, which seems like a worst-case scenario for Houston.

As noted this weekend, the Rockets also have interest in bringing Chris Bosh back to his home state. That’s the ideal situation for them, although you have to believe Toronto could get more than the mother of all expiring contracts for a consensus All-Star.

I'm so jealous of houston having a 23 mil expiring all-star that contributes 0% to their team. Anything they'll end up getting will probably be a big improvement

They dont want him so much as they want the 23 mill expiring that comes with him. For teams looking to rebuild and get some cap space thats the ultimate prize out there right now.

Phillly newspaper confirms talks between Rox and 76ers

An NBA source confirmed Tuesday that talks have taken place between the Sixers and Rockets about swingman Tracy McGrady.

Houston is looking to deal McGrady and his expiring $23 million contract by the Feb. 19 trade deadline.

An ESPN.com story claimed the Sixers “hinted at a package of (Andre) Iguodala and Samuel Dalembert for McGrady,” though the source said the Sixers “didn’t hint.”

“Houston is going through the league” seeking the best offer, according to the source. “Nothing is hot.”

Houston should try and trade for Kevin Martin (and Nocioni and Kenny Thomas) for T-Mac and Lowry - Sacto clear room for Evans to continue to grow and save money when T-Mac leaves, and they get a nice PG to run their young team. Houston get the pure scorer they need, a tough forward in Nocioni (who fits the way they play), and some expiring back in Thomas. Works for both teams.

I don't think Houston gets ed on those.
Consider the fork they are in.
    1) They can't guarantee Yao is healthy next season. IF he is not, it's blow it up time. Jefferson, expiring fits in beautifully with this. If he is healthy, they need to convince him to stay, which means championship shots; ie talent on the team. That CHI #1, after moving Deng, is likely going to be pretty good. Jefferson would be an expiring that you could trade for actual talent; he's never had Mcgrady's injury or cancer issues.
    2) Do you really see better above, from your own post.

Washington: Caron Butler, Mike Miller, Randy Foye
Butler = Jefferson, both are expiring next year, No 1st

    Philadelphia: Andre Igoudala, Samuel Dalembert
No expirings, long contracts, it will trap HOU in lux tax for a long time. Dalembert cannot play PF with Yao at C. Iggy >= Jefferson, but no first.

Chicago: Tyrus Thomas, Brad Miller, John Salmons
Miller is an expiring, TT is a lousy prospect at this point, and Salmons < Jefferson. The actual deal proposed in the article is worse, Hinrich +TT = Bad contract + poor prospect.

Knicks: Garbage, garbage, garbage, and Al Harrington
You really like Al Harrington do you? (who's expiring anyway...)

    3) What happens if they keep TMAC and let him expire?. Assuming they decide to keep Scola and Lowry (both of whom will want raises) they commit to the qualifying offers, and have $44 million in salary committed. They are second or third tier players in free agency (compare with the nets, knicks, heat, bulls, Clippers, and Kings)...And they have to make the decisions while they don't know if Yao is Healthy.

Moving TMAC for a 1st rounder and put off the salary space until 2011 (when they know about Yao), while getting a usable player in Jefferson, and saving money this season.

Doesn't look like a bad return for a large expiring who's got a bit of a rep as a locker room cancer. I really don't think you're going to get more, and sometimes, it's best just to keep your options open until next season.
