That's an easy one...if you're bipolar...you dress up in black and white and have sex with both men and women...

Well it's a mood disorder that exhibits varying extremes of mood. It can include episodes of mania or depression, both or both occurring simultaneously. As laymen, it's really easy for us to label someone as being bipolar just because what they say or do doesn't strike our fancy. The actual diagnosis of course comes from a professional.

talk of suicide or delusions of grandeur...usually out of nowhere.

if it's the down side, get them help immediately and take away all guns, ropes and sharp objects...pills too.

if it's the delusional side, just take away their credit cards and give them a joint.

This person goes from one extreme of emotion to the next. I know it's nothing to laugh at.

Being hyper and then being depressed are symptoms of being bipolar, but only a mental health professional will be able to tell you if they are truly bipolar. Sometime bipolar people go on manic episodes where they think they are unstoppable and do all kinds of crazy things. The episodes could last days and days, then they go into a serious depression.. the kind of depression that they can't even get out of bed. During manic times, they need very little sleep, are very hyper, and don't really have much self control about anything. They sometimes spend a lot money and make rash decisions. Then the depression side, you are probably aware of... don't eat much, stay in bed all the time, no self-esteem, suicide thoughts etc.

I don't think that many people (relatively) are actually bipolar...however, the ones who are really really need some medication to get balanced out.

Well lets break the word down first. The first part of it BI means two. So whatever you are looking for I would start by looking for two of them. The next part is po which of course is short for poor. Finally the last part is Lar which is what is sounds like when people from Georgia say liar. So having broken down the word I would say that you are looking for Twin liars in the poor part of Atlanta.

That was easy, next time give me something more complex.

Kori and mrsmaalox have given good definitions. Rapid mood swings may be one symptom, but not necessarily. Rapid, extreme mood swings can be symptoms of several disorders, some of which require medication, some of which require therapy. Real bipolar disorder requires medication to balance. It's true that it's been overly diagnosed in the last, say, 10 years or so - I have 2 friends diagnosed as bipolar, who eventually saw different shrinks, went off meds and are perfectly fine. They were just seen by uninterested pill pushers to begin with.

Ok I have a relative that is bipolar. When he is "sick" he has all these huge plans. He is going to open up all kinds of businesses and take a bunch of trips. He was suing USAA for some type of discrimination and some other stuff and lost. He lost his apt. and vehicle and was picked up for running down the street completely naked. After he got back on his meds he was very embarrased and didn't talk to anyone for quite some time.
When he takes his meds he is perfectly normal but a few days of being off and he will just show up to your house and start making promises and doing weird things.
One day I didn't know he was off his meds and he knocked at my door at 8 am on a Sat and wanted to go have breakfast. I said sure because I thought he was just lonely and I thought we would go somewhere around my place but nope, we went all the way across town to his place and he started to make breakfast for me. He was my ride but I snuck out and caught the bus home.

This person has never talked about suicide, at least to me. Maybe he's just a moody person. Shrugs

Here is the National Ins ute of Mental Health's site on bi-polar disorder. You can download a 31-page pamphlet or browse the information on the site:

A diagnosis by a qualified mental health professional is essential.

The DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Diagnosis) is what professionals use to diagnose...

I was just about to find that. That is the best definition of bipolar disorder. There are varying types of the disorder and the DSM is the professional and clinical way of diagnosis any psychological disorder.

I agree. Nowdays, the condition is way overdiagnosed and is the fashionable disease to explain why things make you sad or happy. Bipolar does not just mean you are very emotional.

I knew someone years ago who was truly bipolar. She would hit a span of days where she would not sleep and would write all her term papers for the whole semester in the course of few days. She was truly manic! Then, she would bottom out, be depressed, and not be able to get out of bed. She was on lithium.

I'm currently watching a do entary on HBO about diagnosing pediatric bipolar disorder. Here's a link about it. I cannot find it online, though.
