    Spurs Assign Hairston To Austin

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they have assigned guard Malik Hairston to the Austin Toros, the NBA Development League team owned and operated by the Spurs.

Hairston has appeared in 21 games with San Antonio this season where he averaged 0.5 points in 3.5 minutes. He has also played in two games for the Toros where he averaged 25.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in 35.0 minutes.

Last season Hairston split the year between San Antonio and Austin. In 15 games with the Spurs he averaged 3.3 points and 1.9 rebounds. In Austin, he earned All-D-League Honorable Mention after averaging 22.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 30 games.

Hairston was selected by the Phoenix Suns with the 48th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft and was acquired by San Antonio in exchange for the draft rights to Goran Dragic. He spent the 2008 training camp with San Antonio where he averaged 5.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in six preseason games before being waived on 10/26.

Good and obvious move..the contract is already guaranteed now, they have nothing left to see, so it looks like they're grooming him for next year based on everything we've seen so far..

he needs to improve his ball-handling and make his shot more consistent, those are his 2 flaws..this should help him in that regard..he's already a very good finisher at the rim, he's already a very good defender..he improved his shot and passing from last year, so hopefully he can clean up the rest and be ready to be a contributor next year..

I guess I'm gonna have to start watching D-league games now..

Finley must be ready to return. Malik was only called back to the Spurs when Finley got hurt.

Nice to have this guy in the queue for next year. He works hard and will improve more if history is any indication.

Shame they can't get Bruce to be a defensive assistant coach for the Toros. Not much in it for Bruce, but man would it pay big dividends to the Spurs.

No big surprise here. If Hairston was going to see the court in the near-term, it would have been against the Nets or Thunder.

He'll play tonight against Tulsa on the internets at 7. Hopefully the ballhogs on the Toros will allow him more touches early this time around.

    Spurs assign Hairston to Toros
By Mike Monroe on Jan 14, 10 04:11 PM | Permalink | Comments (0) Save & Share Yahoo! BuzzYahoo! Newsvine del.icio.us Facebook Google Reddit Fark
The last time the Spurs assigned Malik Hairston to the Austin Toros so he could get some regular playing time, in early December, his stay lasted only two days because Michael Finley suffered a Grade Two sprain of the left ankle when the Spurs played the Nuggets on Dec. 5.
With Finley on the mend and likely to begin suiting up again next week, Hairston has been re-assigned to the Toros, the NBA D-League team the Spurs own and operate.
The expectation is that he will remain in Austin a little longer this time.
A 6-foot-7 guard-forward, Hairston appeared in 21 games this season as a deep reserve. he averaged only 3.5 minutes per game, scoring 10 points, on 5-for-9 shooting.
Hairston should get plenty of playing time for the Toros. In the two games he played in his first assignment of the season, he scored 50 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in an average of 35.0 minutes.

Pop going 8 deep against Thunder was clear sign that Hairston, Mahinmi and Haislip wouldn't play a role for Spurs this year.

Hairston has the edge over the other two that it isn't the end of the road as a Spur for him. He will still get a shot in next summer league and preseason. Playing in D-League will surely help him more to be ready for these events than sitting on the bench.

Haiston, Haislip and Mahinmi has also little expiring contract that could be used as fillers in a trade. Due to what I've said above, I think Hairston is the less likely to be traded.

The video didn't work in IE for some java-related reason I think. Works fine in Firefox.

Interesting decision by coach Snyder to move Gee to the bench initially. Hairston is definitely the focus of the offense early this time.

Gee, I thought the tip off was that that exact trio spent the first quarter of the season together behind the bench in suits.

Two at any given time, but the only other guys who could possibly be sent down are Blair and Hill since they are first and second year players respectively.
