That isn't not wanting to get resign, that's prioritizing playing with the NT over getting resigned which is not the same. If the Spurs wouldn't have put that clause Manu would have resigned.
Malik was pretty popular and he was let go so the same could happen with Manu. I think the part of Manu saying that when the time comes during FA he's going to let his wife decide what's best for him and his career choice and the twins will have no affect on whether he stays or not is pretty interesting.I find it hard to believe that they're going to let arguably their most popular player go.

I could say the same to you. That right is reserved for a special few and that's all-time greats (Duncan). Playing for the umpteenth time for your country and in the process making that more important than your employer (and it looks like it'll cost him future earnings) and then proceeding to play like for the better part of two years will do that.

Those rights are given to the players that spend a long portion of their careers with the same team and during that time write an important chapter of that organisation's history, not only sport wise but in the social aspect also. Players like Tim, Tony, Manu (Bowen if he would still be playing) have earned that right.

I thought Ginobili accepted and understood the fact SA wasn't in a rush for a contract extension, seeing as how he's been injured the past two seasons.
I am surprised to hear he was disappointed with the FO. I would be devastated if he left the Spurs, but I also understand why they aren't in a rush to resign him until after the playoffs to see how he holds up.
I might have lost it but I didn't read anywhere that he was dissapointed with the FO, in fact he said that he realizes that he will be a free agent and he is OK with that.
And now he has been grossly overpaid going on three seasons. You can't in any way justify $10.7M for what he's giving the team this year, unless you want to point to Jefferson and say he sucks too and is also overpaid. How much less money did he take, anyways? No one offered him a contract because he was a restricted free agent and the Spurs had money under the cap to match anything. I can't stand hearing this revisionist history that completely ignores the bargaining position Manu was in when he re-signed.

In 2008 the Spurs wouldn't have gotten where they got without Manu, besides Manu is arguably the most popular player of this team, he makes a lot of money for the organisation even when he's not playing well.

As for 2008, the Spurs weren't that far from beating LA, considering they had big leads in games 1 and 5, and came a bad call from forcing OT in game 4. Manu carried the team in game 3, but was awful the rest of the time. The opportunity cost of his contract may very well have cost them that WCF. I'm not trying to trash Manu because I have been a huge fan of his since the Kinder Bologna days, but if his body can't survive NBA seasons then he's clearly not worth what the team is paying him.
Let me remind you: Manu had the best statistically season of his NBA career, carried the team during a long part of the season when other players were hurt and lead the team in pts and assts in the last playoffs series we won that year, like I said we wouldn't have made it that far without him.
Nealy was a complete scrub. Fan loyalty and quality of play don't always correlate strongly. Dwayne Schintzius used to get huge ovations when he'd come into games, and he was a horrible player and an even worse person with a chequered past.

The combination of Manu's play and the money he makes for the Spurs organisation with his mere presence on the team justify his salary.
If you want to argue, do it fairly. Don't make up just to help your case. I was just arguing the conception that Manu was overpaid in 2008, nothing more than that.

That's a lot of popularity to offset $10.7M on 40% shooting.
Trade Manu now and see the Spurs ticket sales drop considerably, and that is just one example.
The Spurs have sold about 97% of their tickets every year in the Duncan era. Despite Manu's popularity (which is great), I don't think he's affected ticket sales that much. He's made fans more excited, definitely -- but it hasn't been as big of a financial impact in that regard as you might imagine.
Not if they get someone who is better able to help the team compete for a le.
