Mike Florio, editor of ProFootballTalk.com and a SN contributor, says despite Schefter’s report, Phillips’ career is still on shaky ground given the outcome of today’s NFC divisional playoff game at Minnesota.
i would be surprised if jerry doesnt give wade one more season and pick up his option
not that i would but i dont c jerry giving wade the heave ho after a 12-6 season
I don't see an extension..I see Jerry letting him coach out his last season and then deciding, depending on the options.
Wade would make a uva defensive coordinator with Garrett running the offense. I wish they could just demote his fat ass, but sadly the NFL doesn't quite work like that.
I wonder if there was any discussion of that when Wade was hired. Everyone knew that JG was the head coach in waiting.
You know that's exactly the situation, right?
Wade acts as the defensive coordinator, and JG runs the offense. That's exactly how it is.
The point is finding a way to keep him as the defensive coordinator and to replace him as the head coach. I'm sure Wade would agree with calling it a "demotion".
Why? The players are prepared, they give phillips a good effort every game. I don't understand why people want to switch.
Do you have anything productive to add to the conversation?
I'm just pointing out, people want him gone and for what? There's no follow up. Where's the deficiency? You haven't said anything to that effect, and neither has anyone else.
Because Jerry Jones is the coach right now and they don't hand out trophies for regular season wins.
And what are you basing this on? The media? Do you have anything to back up that claim?
Jag and I have been discussing exactly that in another thread. You seemed to wonder if everyone knew that he was the defensive coordinator. We do. Come on over to the other thread and talk about it with us. I've said basically the same thing you did, that it's hard to find a reason to fire him based upon the way the team played in the last few weeks. It doesn't change what he is, and has always been, as a head coach. Cowboys fans aren't really interested in waiting for the Peter Principle to catch up to him and cost the team another year when they've got some talent.
Actually we might as well stay here to discuss it. This is the more appropriate thread.
We may disagree about the reasonings behind his removal as HC, but i can agree with you here.
My view (again): He doesn't command respect. The players may play hard for him, but it's not because he demands it, it's because they are in the mood to. He has to demand perfection from his guys, they need to play hard because anything else is just unacceptable.
Players don't like playing for a hard ass until things actually get hard...then they realize they're prepared for it. These guys aren't mentally tough, and Phillips isn't going to bring that toughness.
Something's missing, and it definitely isn't talent
There are different styles of coaching. Tony Doungey wasn't a hard ass. He wasn't constantly screaming and yelling, or acting like a fool on the sidelines. Yet he won a super bowl. On the cowboys not being mentally tough, I think they showed mental toughness all season, most recently when they were down 0-2 to start december, and rebounded by winning four straight.
Here's a good reason (to me) to fire him. First quarter, you have momentum, you get a 4th and 1 at the 32, you are moving the ball at will and are establishing some rhythm, yet the coach sends in an unproven kicker to try a 49 yard field goal. He misses and you lose the points and the field position battle.
Another year of the Cowboys being an also ran in the NFL. Mediocrity at it's finest. I don't see the point of extending Wade. You know what you're gonna get from him...if his record means anything..at worst you'll get a loss in your first game in the playoffs...at best you'll win one playoff game. It looks to me like Jerry Jones is fine with that. I'm not.
The problem as was stated before is that the Cowboys have the talent, just have no mental toughness or discipline as a ball club. Tony Romo..a goat. Proving time and time again that the big game is just not for him..he collapses.
