Suns seeking trade offers for Stoudemire

    By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports

After recent discussions with Amar’e Stoudemire’s(notes) agent that didn’t appear to destine a contract extension, the Phoenix Suns have increased their efforts to trade the All-Star forward, league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Sunday night.

League executives say the Suns have become more active initiating talks over the past few days, and believe the franchise will take the best offer for Stoudemire before the Feb. 18 trade deadline. The Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Nets are among multiple teams that have a strong interest in Stoudemire, sources say. The Arizona Republic reported Sunday night that the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers have also inquired about Stoudemire.

Suns general manager Steve Kerr met with Stoudemire’s agent, Happy Walters, on Thursday, and league sources say there was little sense an agreement could be reached before the trade deadline. With Stoudemire able to opt out of the final $17.7 million season of his contract, the Suns don’t want to risk losing him for nothing in free agency this summer.

As they did when shopping Stoudemire last season, the Suns want a combination of young talent, salary-cap relief and draft picks for him. Some teams are hesitant to trade for Stoudemire for fear he won’t want to re-sign with them this summer. The Minnesota Timberwolves lead that group of teams, sources say. The Wolves are mostly eyeing small forwards, including the Memphis Grizzlies’ Rudy Gay(notes), the Bulls’ Luol Deng(notes) and the Washington Wizards’ Caron Butler(notes). No one is untouchable on the Wolves roster, sources say.

With Stoudemire having undergone knee and eye surgeries in recent years, there are differing perspectives on his market value. Nevertheless, Stoudemire has made a strong comeback from eye surgery this season – averaging 20.9 points and 8.6 rebounds – and impressed rival executives and scouts. Stoudemire has been inclined to use Pau Gasol’s(notes) three-year, $57 million contract extension as a parameter for negotiations, and more than one league executive believes that cir stances will result in Stoudemire getting richly rewarded this summer.

If LeBron James(notes) and Dwyane Wade(notes) don’t leave Cleveland and Miami this summer, teams like Chicago, New York and New Jersey may be apt to turn to Stoudemire as an alternative. After James and Wade, Stoudemire is part of a second tier of free-agent stars with Toronto’s Chris Bosh(notes) and Atlanta’s Joe Johnson(notes).

“Someone will pay him the max – or very close,” one Western Conference executive predicted.

As it stands now, it appears unlikely that will be the Phoenix Suns.

ofcourse if he were to be traded, it would be to the Eastern Conference, not to a rival in the Spurs

If he were traded, it would need to be to a team with young talent, since the Spurs have no young talent (and no some fat without ACL's doesn't count), I wouldn't count on it.

that trade would be ok, but we would need to add more young talent, like the article states

Spurs have young talent overseas, maybe the Suns are interested in Nando De Colo, Sanikidze, etc

ROFL. As option #1 on a running team, Amare isn't even coming close to what Gasol is doing in an injury-plagued season as a clear #2 guy. About the only GM in the league who'd be stupid enough to trade Gasol for Amare would be Chris Wallace. Stoudemire needs to find a less-delusional metric to judge himself by.

I'll see your missing ACLs and raise you some serious retina problems and micro-fracture surgeries.

Amare is unhealthy and a stupid lazy . He dunks though. Oooooooo!!!

Unless Tim Duncan was involved, I don't see anyone on the Spurs that the Suns are remotely interested in.

If Amare opts out of his contract he will an idiot. No one is going to give him a max contract.

thats fine, the spurs have gambled enough this season to trade for an injury prone player with defensive issues.

Are you telling me the Suns wouldn't be interested in Blair, Hill, Mahinmi and/or Splitter? Besides you could get some great shooters like Mason and Bonner (expiring contracts) that would fit very well in the Suns system.

Stoudemire would be putting up pedestrian numbers if he didn't have Nash spoon feeding half his points.

    Overrated.

If the Suns accept to trade him to us for some expiring contracts and some young talent, the Spurs would be crazy not to go for it.

    Are you ing nuts?

Even if the spurs could get him for scraps why the would you want him? You know damn well he's gonna be demanding a monstrous salary and on the spurs he'd put up Jefferson like numbers.

That's a lie, Amare was a great offensive player even playing with Stephon Marbury, he's quick, strong, can finish and has a very good jump shot. Besides Ginobili may not be Nash but he's pretty damn good at setting up teammates out of the pick and roll.

I'm not saying we should trade all of them for him, I'm just naming the assets the Spurs have to catch the Suns atention.

The spurs won't even have enough $$$$ to sign Ginobili after paying Amare what he'll be demanding, which is 15-20m contract.

He'd be a 1 year rental and a costly one at that.

And it may be worth it, let's face it if the Spurs don't win it all this year (or at least make it far) no way that this team remains a contender for the rest of the Duncan era, desperate times call for desperate measures.

That "fat ass with no ACL's" has alot of heart, great nose for the boards, and more hustle than your boy with a gimpy eye and a knee thats just as "iffy" as ours, and he is only 20.. but you wouldnt know that because your a biased basketball fan..he's done good in limited minutes, and has ZERO plays run for him, all his points are off of clean-ups and getting himself in the right position to score..dont sleep on Blair like all the other teams kickin themselves in the ass for passin up on him in the draft.

I've seen Blair up close before. He's not fat.
