Some good things to say?

In the year he's been president, I've been impressed with how his daughters conduct themselves in the public eye. Someone has apparently taught them manners; possibly Obama.
Now, WTF was up with all that podium thumping? We should have had a drinking game involving the number of times he let his arms fall to the lectern.

He seemed to say that he had "heard" the anger of the country regarding the economy, and that the economy, and jobs, was the most important thing to the electorate, and the order of topics and time spent on topics in the speech seemed to reflect that. (health care didn't come in until 45 minutes into the speech, for example.) Whether or not any of that translates into anything useful, who knows?

I got to say that Obama showed real moxie last night….I like the new Obama…The guy willing to take on corruption & mistakes made by everyone…Demos, Republicans, bankers, court justices, special interest groups…I hope he can govern like a guy running for one term instead of these politicians who are more concerned with empire building…
Real Moxie? Obama is backpedaling on all the he has thrown around for the last year and a half, he is going to wreck.
Only big problem Obama has, is he can hardly just say "it's Ws' fault" any longer. Funny how it only took people a few months to catch on to what they had really elected.
It's back to "Obama opens mouth....stock market drops a couple hundred points" again.
Hang on, we are in for a long ride.

What's gone right in Washington
Anil Dash, who's a lot smarter than me, blogs about stuff like the relative importance of the iPad versus the State of the Union address. Regarding the latter, he has a pretty impressive list regarding things getting better, like:
- The last U.S. Marines are leaving Iraq.
- Credit card companies can no longer charge interest on fees, and can't retroactively raise your interest rate on existing balances.
- We know who visits the White House, and who they're affiliated with.
- We responded, imperfectly but with heart and sincere effort, to the disaster in Haiti. Just as we wish we had after Katrina. Leadership matters most in emergencies.
- Our current President readily admits when he's made mistakes, respects the validity of arguments that he disagrees with, and has members of the opposing party in his cabinet.
- The Department of Homeland Security now allocates its security spending according to threats, not by spending the same amount of money on Montana as it does on New York.
- My 401k is up 30% since the current President took office
I've been talking to a lot of rank and file people, here's a little I'd add:
- This Administration is telling us where the money went, instead of hiding that.
- They've encourage gov't workers to fix they way they work, instead of telling workers that what they do doesn't matter.
- They're trying to root out corruption, rather than the opposite.
- Back pay for stop-lossed veterans; serious about medical and educational benefits, which is to say they actually support the troops, rather than the opposite.
That works for me, as a libertarian pragmatist.

After one year, still a lot of work to do to clean up the dubya/Repugs mess, and correct the Dem/MN screwups of the first year.
Unlike dubya's first year, no forewarned/ignored terrorist attacks on US soil, no secret intention of invading a foreign country to grab their oil.

I can agree with this. It seemed like Bush tried to ignore serious problems or at least discussing serious problems.
That's hardly a fault. It's not Obama's job to attack his own record in public.
He has you and me and everybody else for that.
He could explain it. He could certainly acknowledge that he has not lived up to his promises of transparency and change. I do not care so much about the not accomplishing health care or cap and trade. Those are things that are outside of his control because it requires another branch of government. What he is responsible for is explaining the promises that he failed to perform. Examples such as giving generous contracts to your buddies who vote for you, opening up the health care debate, etc...
I know that few presidents will accept that they make mistakes. Certainly Bush nor Clinton ever did. But wouldn't you be really impressed with a president who steps up to the plate and says, "okay, maybe I screwed this up or promised this and can no longer deliver, but here is what I will do about it or here is why I did not deliver." Something like that. It would go along way with me. Someone who hates just about everything in Washington right now.
It would have looked funny if Obama spent much time picking the wax from his own ears, in a SOTU speech.
Is your complaint really that Obama didn't spend enough time talking about himself?
Did you expect him to, for some reason?

The more general dissatisfaction I completely understand.
We're still waiting for dubya, head, rummy, feith, and the whole POS neo-cons to admit they lied the US into Iraq, and then ed up mgmt of their bogus war?
And they never apologized for not stopping 9/11 or even showing any sense of urgency, or even interest, in terrorism until 9/11 gave them their desired pretest to go into Iraq.
