How did that happen?

Colts Pro-Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney has a torn ligament in his right ankle that will make it difficult for him to play against the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV, a source familiar with the injury told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Despite the fact that Colts president Bill Polian has predicted that Freeney will play, there are serious questions about whether he will. Even if Freeney can, the question then becomes how effective he can be.
Freeney, who has been in a walking boot all week, flew to South Florida on Friday to begin a battery of treatments for the ankle. Freeney has used a hyperbaric chamber this week to help heal, a technique he often uses to try to heal from injuries quickly.
Freeney is also using a device called ARP that is similar to a stem device to move the blood supply to the damaged ankle. The ARP operates differently than normal stem devices, but ARP has helped him in past years recover quickly from groin and hamstring pulls.
The Colts are maintaining that Freeney has a low ankle sprain, not a torn ligament, and that he is still questionable for the Super Bowl.
However, Freeney's ankle is said to be heavily swollen. The torn ligament is on the outside of his right ankle, which will make it difficult for him to pivot and use his whirling-dervish pass moves to get to Saints quarterback Drew Brees.
Freeney injured the ankle pulling up in an effort to not hit Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez late in the fourth quarter of the Colts AFC Championship Game win. Freeney didn't hit Sanchez, but he did injure himself.
Freeney will continue undergoing treatment all week with the hope of playing. But if the Colts do not have Freeney, they will be missing their top defender, a player that tied for third in the league this season with 13.5 sacks.
saints 45 colts 24
It's a good thing they threw away the last 2 games of the season.
Big Blow to the Colts-I was leaning towards Colts winning a close one but it might be a blowout the other way....not unless Peyton can play "D" too.![]()
Uh.... they're in the Superbowl. It was the right call.
The do you care about a regular season game now?
What happens if they play all their starters in those two games and Peyton gets blindsided, or hit like Theismann?
Do you really care about two meaningless regular season wins when you're in the Superbowl in less than a week? You're a Spurs fan. You should know better than to care about the regular season.
you know thats bull .
thats so Las Vegas doesn't go ape .
I've cared all along. I've never thought they should've thrown away those 2 games. But then you already knew that.
And yes, they're in the SB...and yet, Freeney might not play because he's injured. The point is, he got injured whether they threw away those games or not.
They should've played to win them.
Oh, and throwing away regular season games in the NBA is far less important than in the NFL. 82 vs 16. Big difference.
Freeney has always had superhuman Dirk type healing powers. He's going to at the very least be on the field on 3rd downs.
Dwight has played his whole career hurt. He'll at least be in the game on passing downs.
If he does he might be hurting the Colts. I don't think he's going to be able to do his spin move with a ligament tear in his ankle.
Colts are ed. This gets even easier for Brees. No one beats the Saints in a shootout.
If he doesn't play the Colts will lose. Without a pass rush Brees won't be stopped.

People giving up on the Colts because of Freeney being injured makes me laugh. Do yall think he's the ONLY defensive player out there?
Yeah, he's damn good...but the rest will step it up.
No way Peyton lets them sit on their butts feeling sorry for themselves.
"No one beats the Saints in a shootout"
After 10 years of people saying no one beats Manning in a shootout, your dumb ass thinks Brees can? What a tool. Colts secondary is best in the league. If any team can beat the Saints in a shootout, the Colts can. That last sentence does not work the other way around.
I also think Raheem Brock crominates filling in for Freeney, if Freeney doesn't go.
Saints secondary is much more intimidating. With studs in Gay(also a former Patriot) and Sharper, they will make the plays needed to win. That Saints offense is flat out amazing. They are so lethal, that you don't want to play a high scoring shootout with them. They are just too good. If Freeney can't be effective, that makes it so much easier for the Saints O line. They can just double Mathis and Brees will have ALL DAY to pick apart that Colts average secondary.
I like how alot of people forge about Brock, who would be the #1 DE on a lot of teams.
the 26th ranked pass D sure has Peyton, Wayne, and Clark shaking in their cleats
Why don't you just go ahead and say you don't want Peyton to get another ring because it solidifies him being better than Brady forever, instead of beating around the bush.
@ you actually taking my crap seriously.
I don't hate Manning nor the Colts like I did back in the day(Mostly because I was a HUGE HUGE homer). I rooted for them when they played the Bears in the superbowl. In fact I am a HUGE fan of Manning believe it or not. The Colts have a good group of guys on their team. I rooted for them against the Jets. I hope I am proven wrong Sunday. Honestly, I really don't want the Saints to win but I am preparing for it especially with Freeney out. If this means Manning>Brady so be it. I can accept that. Manning is a GREAT QB.
