looks like the opposing team's power forward has been consistently killing us this year. from these stats, i'm guessing they're listing duncan as center, not power forward. this tells me that blair and mcdyess have been really underperforming on defense.

i'm a big blair fan. but having seen the spurs play the blazers live this past week, it's pretty obvious that blair screws up on defense a lot.

that said, here's my top 5:

A lot of that can be attributed to our poor perimeter defenders and poor overall pick & roll D though, so it goes both ways IMO..

Both Blair and McDyess do make a lot of mistakes defensively from a team defense standpoint, but McDyess has been a pretty good individual defender these last few weeks..

Blair is not a bad interior defender. However, against the PFs that have range, he struggles a lot (and McDyess to a lesser degree). The one team I don't want to see in the playoffs is the Blazers because of how bad Blair/McDyess match-up with Aldridge. He's averaging 22.3 pts/game against the Spurs this year on 53% shooting.

McDyess has been improving defensively the last couple weeks. Blair is probably going to continue being below-average on defense until next year at the earliest (and maybe forever). He's undersized which is a huge liability on the defensive end and he's a rookie. The defensive schemes of the Spurs are hard for veterans to pick up and Blair wasn't a particularly good defender in college to begin with.

3. Matt Bonner - pre-injury he was playing the best he ever has
4. Manu - doing everything but scoring
5. George Hill - much improved since last season

7. Mike Finley - still old, still makes his 3s, still can't defend
8. Keith Bogans - solid defensively (thought not Bruce) but inconsistent shooter
9. Theo Ratliff - changes shots when he gets minutes

10. Tony Parker - worst defensive year ever, PF really hurting him
11. Antonio McDyess - rough start but looks like he's picking things up
12. Richard Jefferson - a disaster as the 2nd-highest paid player on the Spurs

When your supposed second, third and fourth players have disappointed, it's not a surprise that the team overall has disappointed.

The only thing I'd slightly differ on is George, as he's exceeded expectations in my view. Had Pop not spoken so glowingly of him to start the season, there'd be no question he'd exceeded expectation.

Basically, if the season ended last year and we knew nothing of what happened during the offseason, George's performance thus far would've been a pleasant surprise.

i find this kind of ranking rather "condescending" towards the readers, like they aren't able to know what to expect from a specific player.

We all know that Tim is a A+ player, TP and Manu, A players, Bogans, maybe a D player etc etc....


any ranking leading to Fin and Ratliff above manu and TP is irrelevant IMO. Really useless to show the overall impact on the team.

I see what you're saying, but I don't think your analogy to school is completely accurate. Some players are paid larger sums of money, and are expected to perform at a higher level.

Actually really good to show overall impact, especially since those at the bottom carry so much weight. 8-12 are the problems...
