How does Karl even draw that play up with Dirk in the huddle?

I'm not sure, but I think Dirk didn't even get the ball from Billups once for making a shot. Moreover, I think either Dirk or Durant would have drilled the buzzer beater. Very likely Melo would have missed those FT's Dirk made in the clutch.

even if the story had ended with Melo getting the ball home and West winning the game, the MVP trophy would have gone into melo's pouch or Billups's rather than into Dirk's by any means. For melo it's identically the same scenario whether he missed the 3 and help East win the game or he passed the damn ball to someone else for an easy shot to extend it to OT or win it, neither way could he achieve the motha ing trophy that he's been drooling over.
