No.... 50 years from now people are going to remember Jordan as one of the GOAT no one ever remembers what a GM did....
As the le says, could Jordan ruin his legacy and go along the lines of Isiah Thomas and Elgin Baylor if the team tanks for the next 10 years?
Does the ownership/GM position say anything in regards to their basketball IQ trumping business savy decisions in the basketball world?
I'm not a Jordan fan, and I've never been - but my respec for Thomas did lower after what he did to the Knicks, so I'm willing to say that this could change the outlook of future generations that never watched Jordan play. This was brought up on Mike and Mike this morning, and they believe it would hurt his image for future generations.
No.... 50 years from now people are going to remember Jordan as one of the GOAT no one ever remembers what a GM did....
- Ratted on Shaq during interrogation
- Accused of Rape
- Broke up a dynasty
- Publicly asked for Bynum to be traded
- Asked to be traded after he broke up the team
- Could not get out of the first round without Shaq and Gasol
Its only been 2 years, give it another 50 and then we'll talk..... Im pretty sure there are other GMS who pulled off a better trade than the Lakers one but arent remembered. No one wants to remember GMS
Why would Jordan's off-court business decisions taint or ruin his on court-legacy i.e. suddenly his 6 rings don't mean as much?
Separate the two. It's not hard to do.
Of course not. Jordan will still be and always be Jordan, the great, for his playing career, whatever he does outside of his own basketball career is another thing.
I love Jordan and believe him to be the GOAT but I can see the OP's point.... say he does buy the team and winds up losing his shirt MC Hammer style??? I'd hate to see that and I believe on some level it would undermine some of his luster... he would still be the GOAT, no doubt but when spoken of people would add- "But, he lost his ass as an owner"
Coudnt of said it better.
You see I did not know that, goes to show how much people really care about the GM position and I bet when the name Jerry West comes up, the first thing in their mind is not going to be his GM work but him as a player.
No . Have you guys not been paying attention?
Exactly. If Jordan were to ruin his legacy, it has already happened with what he's done as an executive with Washington and Charlotte. It's not going to be ruined. He's most likely the greatest player in the history of the game (I still think it's debatable between him and Wilt). What he does as an executive or an owner doesn't change that. No, I don't think Jordan would ruin his legacy by purchasing the Bobcats.
Heck, his Hall of Fame speech ruins his legacy more than anything he could do as a potential owner.
Fixed...
And just in case you weren't aware due to your Kobe hating obsession. The post was meant about West... not Bryant. Friggen Houston Morons!
Now to the OP. Jordan will have 2 legacies. One as a player. One as a Owner/GM. Much like Baylor, who was/is regarded as one of the all time great players and downright crappy GM.
50 years from now there will be a whole new breed of players and magic, jordan, kobe, James etc etc will all be distant memories no different than how people today acknowledge players that played 50 years ago.
Jordan will always be remembered as one of the all time greats along with a handful of others that are interchangable within the list. All arguable.
I personally have on the top 5 of my GOAT list as:
1. Wilt
2. Oscar
3. Jordan / Magic
4. Russell

That was the 2005-06 Lakers. That Suns team that you say "were one hip check away from a finals berth" was the 2006-07 Phoenix Suns. And, that hip check happened in the Western Conference semis. They were a hip check away from the WCF, not the Finals.
edit: unless there was a hip check I don't remember in that Dallas-Suns WCF.
Kobe nut slobber got OWNED!!!!! He wasn't even a fan of the Lakers from 05-07. He just showed up when Pau did

My bad... I mixed up the 2 years with regards to the hipcheck. My point was that the Lakers should not have even been in the playoffs. That goes for both years. My finals reference was to the WCF... I should have made that more clear. In 2006 they made the WCF.
