I believe that something has to go in both directions. Think back to the Beno deal. It would have been for something like a conditional 2nd rounder that was top-58 protected.
I know but why would the Spurs even ask for a second round pick in that situation unless they had another possibly trade. That shows a surprisingly lack of desperation from the Spurs.
Perhaps the Grizzlies are offering a second round pick in addition to one of their small contracts.

Roger Mason for nothing? WTF?
It would have likely be a top55 protected second round pick. Mason for nothing isn't a legal trade CBA wise. Miami must trade something.
Mason/Mahinmi for Wright/Cook saves the Spurs $1M....
Spurs liked both when they came out in the draft...thoughts?
That's what I thought...can't just trade a player for cash, has to be some kind of pick involved.
Makes sense.
If that's what it meant, that makes sense. Hopefully not because if the Spurs are playing any type of hardball in that situation, there's likely more demand for Mason than expected.
If the Spurs do trade Mason to the Heat or someone else is it still possible to get Tyrus Thomas without being able to include Mason now?
For clarity sake, the Spurs should start replace "impossible second round pick" with the rights to Sergei Karaulov in the trade rumors.
Possible? Yes. Likely? No.
I think so. We'd probably have to include the pick the Bulls have been shopping around for. I'm OK with that assuming Splitter does come over.
Thomas alone...yes via Bonner/Mahinmi.
The proposition to include Salmons would be nixed though.
Wondered where you'd been.
By the way, I'd just like to say Ken Berger at CBS Sports has said absolutely nothing of consequence regarding the Spurs in any manner.
Unfortunately IMO, Unless everything goes as planned with chicago for thomas (which seems pretty unlikely at this point) i believe we give up mase as a salary dump and 2nd round pick. (ugh i hope im wrong)
Mason in a salary dump trade would mean its time for baseball. Pop has lost the team. Pop knows it. RC knows it, and the guy with the check book knows it. Cut the losses and start with damage control denials. Let Manu walk in the summer so we can say it was on Manu. The meltdown begins.
Well . . .
When are the roster-cards due for tonight's game? Warm-ups are in what, 45 minutes maybe?
We should know pretty soon if there's a trade going down tonight, otherwise it's just wait for tomorrow at 2.
It's probably wait for tomorrow.
I really dont see chicago giving up expiring for our expirings, if this is really going to go down we would have to be a 3rd team involved in a deal (aka mcgrady deal) or be willing to take on salmons.
both very unlikely.
i would start to turn our attention to miami and memphis now.

Bulls have fallen out of consideration for TMac and Houston focus on negotiating draft pick protection to complete NY deal, sources say.
"I guess Chicago could emerge again," a source involved in talks told Y! Sports, "but it doesn't look that way now."
I'll be glad when tomorrow comes and goes so we can be done with the Trade Speculation Threads and start with the Grizzled Free-Agent Signing portion of the season.
ugh thats the worst part of the season. nothing but waiting and waiting and waiting.
http://twitter.com/WojYahooNBAThe Suns have told Amar'e Stoudemire that he is playing tonight against the Dallas Mavericks, suggesting no imminent trade, sources tell Y!
From Wojo twitter page...not Spurs related, but Amare saga drags on for one more day.
