Poor Ian, wrong fighter, wrong coach, wrong team.
ok so yesterday i attended the preliminaries for golden gloves regionals and as i looked at the ring i noticed a sponsor i thought wouldn't be in the mix; the san antonio spurs. also to my surprise there was a spur in the building who was sponsoring this kid named ian mahinmi mahinmi if i am not mistaken by what i heard. i'm sure i heard the kid's name wrong but i didn't mistake that name and to my suprise ian mahinmi himself was sitting 2 chairs behind the squad i train with.
as i was bull ting with my squad i decided to go shake ian's hand and tell him, "tell pop to play you man! we all wanna see you on the court and off the bench! tell pop to let you get some burn."
ian was polite and just kept shaking his head up and down when i was talking to him.
anyhow, the kid he sponsored lost, was a poor sport, and showed his bad at ude in the ring. he kept holding, pushing, and just plain cheating but in the end dude lost and rightfully so!
Poor Ian, wrong fighter, wrong coach, wrong team.
Cool, but you should have told him to "tell Timmy to tell Pop to let you get some burn". Telling Pop directly will just put Ian in a suit behind the bench.
I thought this thread was about Marini Martini. I read it wrong.
Was my Joe Souza there?
If Duncan, Pop, or anyone important from the Spurs wanted to give him more minute's he'd get some. In the 2 minutes and 30 seconds he averaged in the two games of the road trip he also had two turnovers. With turnovers being a team problem throughout the season that doesn't help and something has to be wrong with Ian if a rookie can grab consistent minutes over him.
He seems like a class act but if the Spurs could he'd get some burn in the d-league. But with the amount of lineup changes the Spurs have made, maybe he's still got a shot.

i have no idea man. i had the double matchup sheets for yesterday but i threw them away last night and he isn't on the matchup sheet for today. what gym does he represent?
Joe Souza was one of boxing's best cut men. He has been in the corner for a bunch of different big name boxers. The guy is like 72 now though and has been sick. He is from here in SA and really big into Golden Gloves. I think he trains kids still from the boys and girls club.
dude i have no idea about boxing except that i drive to the south side to train. that's about it. thanks for the lesson though. haha.
LOL you can't be serious with this..in the 2 minutes and 30 seconds? LOL..
Also, I highly doubt anybody other than Pop has a say in these things..
Why are you talking about Blair like that? You're acting like being unable to beat him out is a bad thing..he's possibly the 3rd best rookie of his class so far and the 4th or 5th best player for the Spurs this season..Ian might end up sucking, but not being ahead of Blair in the rotation shouldn't mean anything..
+1
Cane likes to pretend there aren't problems when it concerns his idol, Lord Poppy .
I don't think Tim Duncan has the ear of Pop any more than Hairston, Ian, and George Hill for that matter. I'm sure he wishes he did, but Pop's ego is too big for him to feel comfortable talking to Pop openly about team issues.
And I'm not suggesting he should be like Brandon Roy and basically dictate everything concerning the team, but a little communication would go a long way in solving problems, and obviously there is no communication happening.
After Duncan's statement to the media during all-star break, I don't see how anyone can't agree that the above seems to be the case.
The problem with you theory is that Blair has posted monster numbers and has seen his playing time decrease over the last several games while players like Bogans, Mason and Bonner have had increased playing time.
Pop does what he does and is so prideful that he will not admit a mistake until the season is over. Its the same reason he refused to play Bowen last year and why he still goes small ball...pride.
My only guess is that the Spurs were impressed with what they have seen from Mahimi through most of the year in practice and the limited playing time and do not want to have another team slip in and steal him by throwing 3 million a year at him, which the Spurs will not match. This of course is wishful thinking and probably not the case. Ian will more than likely not be back next year.
Pop has too much pride and ego to let Ian play? GTFO with that bull , this dude wants to win and he's always deferred the success to his players.
Duncan didn't take a paycut for nothing, what he says is pretty important to the organization. If he or anyone else that was important felt Ian deserved more minutes...he'd be getting them.
Ian's not doing himself any favors by turning the ball over in the few minutes he got in the rodeo trip; shame since the Spurs could use him otherwise. And it says a lot that Pop continues to give Blair minutes despite him being a wildcard - that means they know what to expect from Ian and its less than who they're currently playing.
How did Ian earn fans?
Ian couldn't get extra playing time after scoring 15 points and having a very good game in the only actual minutes he's received this season..so you think he can help himself by playing better in GARBAGE TIME?!..LOL..please..
Pop decided from the beginning of the season that he wouldn't play him, that's pretty obvious..
He might not be proud in the words that he uses when he addresses the media. But give me a break. Pop will not admit a mistake and he will drop two games in the playoffs before making a change because of his pride. Pop is a great coach, but he has been terrible this year and last year.
I don't know what you mean by saying that pop continues to give blair minutes. He should be playing him 25-30 minutes a night. Instead, he is lucky to get 15.
Ian earned fans by playing well every time he has had a chance to play. The game you keep referring to where he had a couple of tournovers was BS. He got called for a fluke of a travel which was a beautiful move for someone his size. He also scored a couple baskets and grabbed some boards. Every time Ian has played, I have been impressed that he has shown some form of knowledge for the game. He is raw, but he could get playing time on most teams and would probably score 4-5 points grab 3 boards and block a shot in 10 minutes of play every night.
Nice to see Timmy's finishing ability through contact.
From the game recap tonight.
Spurs C Ian Mahinmi has played in just seven games this season, and coach Gregg Popovich doesn’t see many chances for the 2005 first-round pick and long-term Spurs project to get on the floor. Between Duncan and the rest of the frontcourt, Popovich said Mahinmi simply can’t work his way up from the end of the bench.
That caption quote from Pop should've read:

Between Duncan and the rest of the frontcourt and his commitment to small-ball, Popovich said Mahinmi simply can’t work his way up from the end of the bench.
