Lightning bolts appear above and around the Chaiten volcano as seen from Chana, some 30 kms (19 miles) north of the volcano, as it began its first eruption in thousands of years, in southern Chile May 2, 2008. Cases of electrical storms breaking out directly above erupting volcanoes are well do ented, although scientists differ on what causes them. More than 150 times in the past two centuries, volcanic eruptions have been accompanied by spectacular displays of lightning with broad bolts of lightning streaking across the sky, or as St. Elmo's fire (ball lightning) that cascades from above.

Hardly mysterious, though. This is very common with volcanic eruptions.
I actually used the lightning they were able to capture from Redoubt (the first time they've been able to capture it on film, IIRC) for my profile background.

Yep. Static electricity from all that fast circulating particles and gas is easily understood.
There are pics of Mt St. Helen's eruption with lightening in the volcanic smoke
Ain't no CGI that can come close to Nature.
damn thats crazy!
Pretty damn cool pics!
