Report: Allen Iverson Has a Drinking Problem
    SportingNews

Stephen A. Smith and Bill Ordine of The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote a piece today detailing Allen Iverson’s failed marriage, and it’s full of all sorts of juicy bits of intrigue. The juiciest, by far, is this one:

According to several NBA sources with knowledge of the situation, Iverson has been troubled by excessive drinking.

If true, that’s a major issue, and something that everyone should hope he can take care of soon. With his basketball career likely over, it’s clear that Iverson needs to take care of his personal life, and we all wish him luck.

In terms of his legacy, though, the most interesting part of the article comes from Iverson’s former coach Larry Brown:

"This is going to be another situation where something difficult that has happened in his life takes away from all of his accomplishments and everything he stood for," said Charlotte Bobcats coach Larry Brown, who coached Iverson with the Sixers. "That, to me, is the saddest thing of all."

Iverson hasn’t been a legitimate force in the league for several seasons, so there’s been a tendency to focus on his errors and let them overshadow the great player he once was. Brown’s right: at this moment, the Answer’s recent failures and personal issues are making us forget what made him such a special basketball player and league icon in the first place.

In the grand scheme of things, these personal issues are more important than basketball. But no matter what happens to Iverson in the long run, distance from these dark times of his career will help us appreciate his importance and greatness once again.

As a man, Iverson clearly has some issues that need attention. But that doesn’t mean we have to forget what he did on the court.

Really? I mean, is this something that should be reported as news? This is his personal demons and should be left that way. Yes I know he's a star and that's what cons utes as news these days, but that's kinda pathetic. Hopefully he gets his life in order and can rebound from this. Good luck AI.

AI was overrated who only cared about getting his own shots and basically forced the Sixers to put guys around him who didn't know how to score. What an asshole this guy was throughout his career. The image he portrayed was everything the NBA feared. Good riddance to him. Idiot.

AI was one of the better scorers of his generation, that'll be his legacy.
He's obviously not a winner or leader, however.

Once in a terrible Eastern conference. They would have lost in the first round in the West. That was Larry Brown's coaching mostly.

People shouldn't downplay this news. I'm sure 80% of the NBA and America in general drink too much, but there's a difference between drinking too much and losing your career and family over alcohol addiction. Who knows if this is even valid reporting or has anything to do with his recent career failures, but it wouldn't surprise me and if so, it's tragic, not something to scoff at. Another all time natural athlete throwing it away prematurely.

Come on, man, you're better than that. Did you see what he did in those Playoffs? With that team? And just getting a game from the Lake Show in those Finals was an accomplishment.

What AI and the Sixers did in 2001 shouldn't be undersold.

Looking back, they beat Toronto in 7 games, Milwaukee in 7 games. Also, they had great defenders around him like Mutombo, Tyrone Hill, Lynch before he got hurt. Yeah, he played great and got to the Finals, but let's not act like he was a winner. Larry Brown had a big influence on that team and basically had to put the perfect team around Iverson.

At least they didn't quit against the Lakers like the Spurs and Kings did in those playoffs.

Don't bother. If you have to debate whether or not AI is a great player and winner, you have already lost.

AI was always over rated his whole career. What good is it to score 30 ppg if you shoot 40% doing it? Wouldn't your team be better off if you fed a post scorer some of the time, you know, someone who shoots 50-55%?

I hope he gets his life together, but knowing the workings of the 12 step program, and AI's personality, I'm not holding my breath.
