Pistons’ Stuckey collapses, taken to hospital

Detroit’s Rodney Stuckey was conscious and breathing on his own as he was taken to a hospital after collapsing on the Pistons’ bench during a game Friday night.

The Pistons said Stuckey was taken to the Cleveland Clinic and his vital signs were stable, but was going for further testing and observation.

Stuckey was wheeled off the court on a stretcher during the third quarter after he collapsed into a trainer’s arms on the bench during the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Stuckey walked off the floor for a timeout showing no signs of illness. After a few moments in a chair, though, Stuckey slumped over.

Medical personnel rushed over to the Pistons’ bench with a stretcher. Play was halted for 12 minutes as the medical staff worked on Stuckey, placed an oxygen mask on his face and wheeled him into an ambulance.

Cleveland players huddled together with their heads bowed, while Pistons teammate Tayshaun Prince sat silent in his chair a few feet away as Stuckey was being treated.

John Kuester on Rodney Stuckey: 'I think he's going to be all right'

    Cautiously optimistic.

That might be the best way to describe how Detroit Pistons coach John Kuester feels about guard Rodney Stuckey, who collapsed on the bench Friday night during a timeout in a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“I think he's going to be OK,” Kuester said today after practice. “I think he's going to be all right. He's probably on the road to recovery right now.”

Kuester spoke with Stuckey after the game Friday night before he and the team returned to Detroit without Stuckey, who spent the night at the Cleveland Clinic.

“He was in great spirits, but time will tell,” Kuester said. “We've got to make sure he's OK.”

The Pistons said Stuckey was released from the Cleveland Clinic today and would return to Detroit later in the day. All the tests conducted in Cleveland came back negative, but Stuckey was scheduled to go through more tests after his return to Detroit.

The Pistons also said that Stuckey did not have a seizure and never lost consciousness, which is contrary to some reports at the time of the incident.

Stuckey is not expected to play Sunday against the Houston Rockets.

The incident happened during a timeout late in the third quarter of a 99-92 loss to the Cavaliers. Stuckey seemed fine as he spoke with teammate Jonas Jerebko on the way to the bench, but he slumped into the arms of strength and conditioning coach Arnie Kander shortly after he sat down.

After a delay of about 10 minutes, Stuckey was taken to an ambulance on a stretcher and then transported to the Cleveland Clinic.

“What happened is scary,” Jerebko said this afternoon. “In the moment, when you're there, it's really scary. I'm glad he's OK. He's feeling good and back to himself. I can't wait till he gets back.”

Several members of both teams gathered on the court following the game to share a prayer for Stuckey.

“The game is much bigger than players, coaches and fans,” Cavaliers forward LeBron James said after the game Friday. “Tonight was a game between Cleveland and Detroit, but when an instance like that happens, we all become one family.

“All of our prayers are with Rodney Stuckey and his family.”

    Cavaliers forward Antawn Jamison agreed.

“We play this game and we compete against one another, but we’re all friends,” he said. “We all understand what we are out there trying to accomplish and the most important thing is his health. He has a family, friends and things of that nature, and he’s a good guy as well.

“I just pray that he has a speedy recovery and that it’s nothing serious.”

It is unclear when Stuckey will return to the basketball court.

“I'm not sure,” Kuester said. “It's going to be up to the doctors and what they determine.”
Stuckey missed two games in November 2008 after becoming dizzy and light-headed in a game.

    Kuester undecided for Sunday
Kuester said a final decision had not been made about how the Pistons would adjust their rotation without Stuckey in the lineup.

“We've got a number of options,” Kuester said. “We talked about them today. We're not ready to make a final decision.”

Center Ben Wallace is also expected to sit out the game Sunday. The Pistons listed him as questionable with a right patella tendon strain.

“You could say day-to-day,” Kuester said of Wallace's status, “but I don't think it's going to be tomorrow.”

    Seriously? That's heartless.

I hope everything is okay. When the reports came out that he had a seizure my heart went out to him immediately. Not that it isn't still but...I really understand it that way.

Anyway. No one deserves that type of experience...no matter what.
