[Ed's note: Our interns have some pretty interesting things to say, so we've decided to turn 'em loose. Here now: the first edition of the Intern Files. Sure, it's not Ric Bucher or Eric Adelson, but in twenty years when you see this name again, you can say you knew him/her when. Or you can totally forget. It's really your decision. For now, we present Deanna on a topic Outside the Lines recently tackled: the Becky Hammon playing for Russia situation in De's (that's what we call her) first love, the WNBA.]
Ok, everybody just calm down.
Yes, Becky Hammon is playing for Russia in the Olympics. But, no that doesn't mean she's a traitor.
She didn't turn down a spot on the U.S. Olympic team in order to play for Russia; if she did that, then you'd have every right to be upset. She wanted to play for the U.S. but she didn't even make the initial try-out list.
Yet, U.S. coach Anne Donovan has been leading the Hammon Haters Club of late. Donovan, you didn't even give her a shot to try out, but you know she's not some scrub. She was No. 2 in MVP votes last season. OK, OK—so maybe Hammon, as talented as she is, didn't fit into the team you were trying to build. That's fine. But, don't go calling out the girl for trying to pursue her dream.
Hammon, a South Dakota native, decided not to give up her goal to play in the Olympics and signed a multi-million dollar deal in the process. As Cheryl Ford told us when she visited the office a few weeks back (we're dropping the video from it on Monday), women players cannot survive on a WNBA salary alone.
Now, Hammon is going to play in the Olympics before she gets too old to do so, while at the same time she will be set financially.
What's more American than that?!
Everyone, please relax. This is not a question of loyalty or patriotism. She's following her dreams as well as being a business-savvy American.
When you aren't hired by the job you want, you go to the job that wants you. Period.
