Doughnut shops. I swear every town out in east Texas, no matter how small, has at LEAST one doughnut shop. That's about it.

The best thing to do in Tyler is to get in your car and drive to Dallas.

(as once told to me by a friend who grew up in Tyler)

One of the stores I supervise is there. Here's what you do - a bit after 11 am you go to Stanley's BarBQue for lunch. Get the two or three meat combo plate with ribs as one choice, and potato salad. Best thing about Tyler.

    Antique stores.

Plus, someone I know near there swears by First Mondays in Canton. It actually takes place on the Thursday through Sunday before the First Monday of the month. Canton is on IH 20 between Dallas and Tyler.

Stanleys is two blocks from my house.

The next time you are here go to Country Tavern. It's just about 10ish miles east of town on Hwy 31. It's a bit of a drive but it easily worth it. Best ribs you will ever eat.

I haven't been to First Monday in forever. I have an uncle that runs a tent rental business out there so we used to go all the time when I was younger. It's basically the world's biggest flea market. It takes all day to walk the whole thing...and they sell just about anything you can imagine. If you like outdoor markets then you will love it. From what I hear, the antique stores are overpriced and the best deals are at the local auctions. I guy I used to work with goes to them a lot...at least he used to a few years ago.

Tyler is what I like to call a tweener city. It has almost all of the city amenities without actually being a big city. I often tell people that if you got rid of the stop lights, gas stations, restaurants and churches you'd have a bare field. At about 120,000 people, it can get pretty congested as all those people are packed into a pretty small area...but it's still not nearly as bad as Dallas. It's one of those cities you live in when you want to settle down and have a family. The city itself is dry, which blows...but that is slowly changing as some of the smaller surrounding areas have turned wet recently.

There are two things that immediately come to mind when someone asks about things to visit while you are here. One is the Tyler Rose Garden. At 14acres it's one of the biggest in the country and it's free. The other is the Tiger Creek big cat sactuary. There are few feelings that match having a 600lb tiger pacing back and forth three feet from you with just a chain link fence seperating you from him. They also have several unique tigers that are only alive in captivity. After that head to Posados for some good Tex Mex or Don Juan on the Square for good authentic.

If you are here overnight and you are looking for night life the options are fairly limited. I don't do a lot of night life anymore because my wife and I are more home bodys. Most people looking for a club/bar atmosphere go to Down Under. If you are looking for a bar that is more low key then Rick's will probably suit you better. Lot's of richers there though. Click's Live is the local music venue if you are into mainstream music.

Overall it's a decent place to live. They just need to start selling alcohol because driving 15 miles to get it gets old.

well i came, i saw, and i got the out as soon as possible. i mean the scenery on the way out there was great and all, but , there's literally nothing to do in that town. stopped by the mall and it was small as and didn't have anything in it, all the shoe stores didn't even have the new kobe's. i love east texas and i'd go back to go camping and fishing but that's about it.

Bene... Thanks for the tip, I love ribs so will definitely try it.

Mavs - yeah if shopping is what you want then Tyler's not the place. I like the laid back country atmosphere when I'm there, it's a nice change of pace from fighting metroplex gridlock daily.

    No problem...you won't be disappointed.

Yeah...our shoe stores suck in the mall. They don't carry the TS Commanders either. From what I'm hearing that mall is going to be history soon anyway. They are planning on building a much larger one on the outskirts of town where Academy and Gander Mountain are. The residential areas south of town are exploding right now, so that makes sense.

I like that Tyler has gotten bigger and has turned into more of a city instead of a small town, but at the end of the day I hope it doesn't wind up with all the big city issues. The road structure in the city is not designed to handle much more than it is handling now. If the city gets up closer to a quarter of a million people it is going to be one uva mess.
