    Remember this kid?

JERUSALEM -- Former U.S. high school basketball star Jeremy Tyler quit Israeli team Maccabi Haifa and returned home Friday, cutting short a disappointing first pro season.

The 18-year-old Tyler arrived in Israel on a wave of publicity in August after deciding to skip his senior year at San Diego High School to gain professional experience.

However, his time in Israel was fraught with problems, and he left two months before the end of the season.

"Due to personal matters, Jeremy chose to leave the team on his own will on March 18 and return home to San Diego," Maccabi Haifa owner Jeffery Rosen said in a statement. "We wish Jeremy all the best."

In the 10 games Tyler played for Haifa, the 6-foot-11 power forward averaged only 2.1 points and 1.9 rebounds in 7.6 minutes. Tyler, who reportedly earned a $140,000 salary, found it hard to adapt to the pro game and couldn't find a place in Maccabi Haifa's starting lineup.

His frustration began to show. Last month, he walked out on the team at halftime to protest not getting more minutes. For the last three games, he sat on the bench not wearing a uniform after being left off the Haifa squad.

Americans in this forum GUARANTEED he would "dominate" even if he played in a "big Euroleague club". Well he cannot even hack it in a small Israel league club.

I think Americans need to start growing up and admitting they greatly exaggerate level of American basketball. The forum was full of Americans guaranteeing he would be in a big Euroleague club and would "crush the compe ion". Instead even in small club in Israel league is too much for him.

You guys need to get grasp on reality.

He is #1 prospect for 2010 NBA draft. As soon as he signs with Euro club he will be automatically eligible for 2010 draft and experts agree he would be above Wall.

You're a damn idiot...not all of us said that. I said it was a mistake for him to leave high school early, and that he needed to adapt his game more before playing pro ball anywhere.

Even if he was playing horribly, he should have stuck it out. Finishing out the season would at least have spoken about the guy's maturity, if nothing else. Quitting now just makes the kid look like a brat.

I know the situation isn't that similar, but Brandon Jennings's stint abroad wasn't all that successful, stats-wise, either. But the experience of playing on the professional level has to at least have been a big aid in the guy's development.

Going to Israel wasn't a mistake; going to Israel and acting like a spoiled child was. Man, this guy slipped from probably being a top 5 pick to a second round project in a year. Ouch.

Israel isn't exactly Europe right now.

Sitting on the bench behind inferior players next to a warzone isn't going to aid his development basketball wise.

He should move to the D-League. Going to Europe should only be an option for excellent prospects + very mature kids.

IIRC, he only signed a 1-year contract. He only intended to play overseas until he was eligible for the NBA draft, anyway.

    1) If his reasons for leaving were security concerns, sure, I'd cut him some slack. Doesn't seem to be the case, though.

    2) That professional team's primary goal was to win basketball games, not develop the kid. He may be more talented any any other big man on the team, but if he was indeed struggling to adapt to the game over there, why should the coach potentially sacrifice wins to get him acclimated?

Besides, I'm pretty sure that team knew he had NBA aspirations. Why sacrifice team success to ensure the development of a guy who may not stick around anyway?

You do realize rockets are flying for the first time in like a year after Israel just took a all over the peace talks.

You answer your own question in the next point.

Besides, I'm pretty sure that team knew he had NBA aspirations. Why sacrifice team success to ensure the development of a guy who may not stick around anyway?
Oh ok if the team knew than it was mutual. Because obviously this kid wants to play in the NBA and not become the next David.

Again, if you're sitting on the bench behind inferior talent (which he is) then it's in his best interest survival wise (see: not dying from a ing BOMB or ROCKET) and career wise to leave. If the team isn't interested in giving him playing time because they know he's just a rental then they should have never have employed him in the first place.

I'm not defending him acting like a spoiled but he made the right choice to get the out of a bad situation.

If evidence comes out that he was scared of the security situation over there, then I'll happily take his side on the matter.

As it stands right now, the only information we have is that he was pissed over not getting playing time. Without anything else to go on, that speaks badly about his maturity level.

The 'personal matters' reason may not mean anything at all, considering how that excuse has been used in recent years.

If the team isn't interested in giving him playing time because they know he's just a rental then they should have never have employed him in the first place.

I may just be presuming here, but I doubt that was the team's mentality when they signed him.

'Oh, here's a highly-touted kid with potential who might be able to help us win now. If he can contribute right away, why not sign him? If he can't contribute right away, it's not that painful an investment because he's leaving for the NBA soon.'
