It's all clear to me now...Pop WANTS to face the Lakers in the first round, when the Spurs are fresh and have the best chance of knocking off the Lakers.

The spurs just lost to the lakers, and the Odom/Gasol combination once again dominant. And that was even without Bynum. What makes you think being "fresh" is going to help
    them this year?

If Ratliff was still here and acclimated to the system I think we'd have a chance against the lakers, but interior defense wasn't deemed a priority by the F.O. which will prove to be the spurs' achilees heel come playoff time.

I have been saying this for weeks...

and it is pissing me off to no end to read all these posts that say this:

the goal is to avoid the lakers at all costs.....

    WTF???

the lakers----and so what if the spurs don't beat em...give it a shot---there's nothing but opportunity as far as I can see...

I hate this fear of the lakers bull ...

don't you want to beat the best????

    why try to sidestep them...???

    I don't get it...

where is that poster from last year who posted a kick ass post ---I believe it was called......

    badassedness...

    or something like that...

that was the at ude we should all have and that is the at ude I, as a fan , want to see from the spurs....

I can't stand to hear pop, timmy and other spurs saying the lakers are above everyone else...the lakers are in another league----- THAT LOSING AT UDE...

    SHOW SOME PRIDE....

    OK....rant over...

Realistically, we're going to make the playoffs, even if it's as an 8th seed. The Grizzlies are 6 games behind us with 9 games left to play. I really don't see them catching us now. We're gonna have to face the Lakers in the playoffs sooner or later...might as well get it over with.

I don't revere them as much as I recognize the fact that they have serious mismatch advantages across the frontline against us and our biggest mismatch (Parker) is a question mark at this point.

Parker is going to have hit the floor running and I don't see that happening after a month+ of sitting. There is going to be chemistry issues most likely as well and he'll have rust to shake off.

All these things really make the lakers a bad 1st round opponent for us.

If Ratliff is the secret weapon against the Lakers, the Spurs had zero chance to began with.

I think all that happened tonight is the Spurs lost a shot at sixth place. Not sure if anyone's paying attention, but that means a first round matchup with Dallas.

6,7,8 are all within a half game of each other

2,3,4 are all within 1.5 games of each other

    4,5 are tied

Still way too early to rule out anything other than the lakers are probably going to be #1 seed.

Spurs are only .5 back from OKC, who's in 6th. I don't think you can say this at all.

That's true, but Dallas just wrapped up the tiebreaker against Denver tonight. Nothing's set in stone, but 1.5 games starts to get bigger and bigger as the season progresses. One in the loss column from New Jersey is huge at this point from a standings perspective.

It's far more likely than the contention of the OP, and it's nothing more than a prediction at this point.

You or I being named to the Spurs' active roster tomorrow is far more likely than the contention of the OP.

Might be too early to be sure where Dallas is gonna end up, but I agree with you on one thing...I'm more worried about playing the Mavs than the Lakers...the Mavs always seem to have our number these days.

The ideal postseason opponent lineup for the Spurs is a good possibility:

1st Round: Lakers (we can beat the Lakers as long as we face them in the first round)

WCSF: Suns (we own the Suns in the playoffs)

WCF: Jazz (we own the Jazz in the playoffs)

I'm calling it now: If we can get by the Lakers, we will make the NBA Finals.

To then lose our first Finals to either the Cavs or the Magic

Yeah...that's the depressing thing...I don't know if we can take 4 of 7 from either of those teams.

The Spurs have won a Finals Series in the 4 ways possible:

    4-1 - 1999
    4-2 - 2003
    4-3 - 2005
    4-0 - 2007

unless they're able to repeat one of those results and go against the trend of always having a different result... this year could be it...

    Spurs can't beat the Lakers.

They are too small and Pop always shrinks against Phil.

I love that they will get to fight the top dog before going out though.
