For one thing, rarely are you laughing out loud when you type it. I prefer a "haha" or the like... that way you communicate amusement without giving the false impression that you were brought to audible laughter by whatever they had to say.

That's true. Like when I really do laugh out loud sometimes I find myself saying "That really made me LOL"
as if just saying LOL would not convey the point
